Tourer's Reserve?

I went for a ride today on my '98 Tourer. I also went for a walk. I felt the cutting out and missing so I switched to "reserve" That worked for about 100'. I coasted to a stop about 3 blocks from home. Walked home, got a gas can and headed back to the bike. Put a gallon or so of gas in it and it started right up.  Well, started up after spinning quite a bit. I'm glad it has a good battery in it.

How much gas is the "reserve" suppose to have?

I guess I'll be filling up every 100 miles until I can get an auxiliary or I'state tank installed.

Anyone have an I'state tank for sale?

The Tourer and Standard fuel tanks hold 5.3 gallons.  Typically, my '98 Standard takes about 4.4 gallons shortly after hitting reserve.  I always figure I should get to a gas station within 30 miles once on reserve.

Anyway...if you still have the stock petcock installed -- and deducing from your description -- it's time to clean your tank and your petcock.  Probably time to replace the petcock's filter screen, too.  Quick and easy to do with minimal tools.  Just make sure your tank is near empty before taking it off.  (You'll be surprised at the amount of sludge that comes out of your tank!)

It's pretty empty now.    I only put in a gallon or so. But that would be about a quarter tank full.  

I looked in the tank when I figured it was empty. Looked fairly clean but I wasn't really inspecting it for cleanliness. I didn't look too closely at the filter screen.

Kinda wondering why Honda called it "Tourer" when you have to stop for gas every ~120 miles.

If the little ball bearing in the petcock doesn’t get seated all the way, the fuel can get pulled thru the reserve port. It could be binding on the lever, or gunk in the petcock, or just not turning the lever to the correct position.
