Can you get away with using old gaskets when checking valve gaps (tappits)

Depends on how much cracking is present. If they're still pliable and show no signs of embrittlement, yes. If they've begun to harden and crack I'd replace them.

Age and running condition has a LOT to do with this. 12k miles in 2 years at moderate temperatures isn't the same as 12k in the same period of time running excessively warm, or spread across 10 years in an area prone to dry rot.

No. '98 and 76k miles, gaskets are are still fine. if u see some fine cracks smear some form-a-gasket #2 on them. then ride.

My gaskets were okay. You'll need sealant such as Hondabond, Yamabond or equivalent for the spots below.





The diagram in the manual is unclear where the sealant goes (to me).





Apply sealant at the 4 'inside corners.'




With cam cover removed, squeeze out at rear end of cylinder head gives an indication where sealant is applied.

Back in 2000 or 2001, I bought a set for my first valve check.

Their still sitting on the shelf in the OEM packaging.
