There is a high end grocery store that carries s couple items not available other than on line.  I get water refills there also at  $.49 per gallon. It is al Ice Mountain unit. Out local water in Illinois tastes and makes bad coffee.
I was on my way out of the store and was going thru the double exit doors . My cart stopped rolling. Thought I got something in the wheel. Tried moving both ways and no luck. A guy a little bigger than me said he would help. Woman behind him (Karen) started a rant and said to get out of the way. Guy turned around and said   ' you are not smart enough to see there is a problem". We both lifted the cart and went outside out of the way. A female clerk came out with a radio control asked a couple questions. There is a lock on the carts when you leave the register. If it is not keyed , the carts lock up in the exit. She said it was used to decrease theft. If carts are removed from . She released my cart.  crazy2

Sounds like that store is trying to stop folks walking out without paying.  Good for them.  Won't stop folks just putting stuff down pants but will stop carts.

Interesting.... The stores in the hoodier areas around here have passive systems with a wire around the perimeter of the parking lot that will lock the wheels if someone tries to steal the cart itself, I hadn't seen an active system like you describe...

Did some searching, here's a news article about it:

I agree it's a sad reality nowadays.  I'd imagine actually arresting and prosecuting shoplifters would have an impact as well.  But that would require funding the police, so I guess it's not on the table.   crazy2

Well Brother given you ain't That Far from Chicago or Cook County for that matter I can understand the store wanting to protect their bottom line. Major Retailers are already pulling out of woke metro areas because sustaining theft rates is no longer viable for them. Not sure how large the operation is there for that store-1 or 1000-theft hurts and increases costs ALL THE WAY DOWN THE LINE which Anyone shopping at that store or that chain of store ends up defraying the cost of.  Ross even with those nasty azz winters at your Northern
Fortress of Solitude I still believe you and Bon Bon woukld be much better off up there than where you reside presently.  cooldude Course thats like My Opinion and opininons are sorta like certain anatomical areas of the body.  Roll Eyes RIDE SAFE.

never heard of locking wheels if leaving the store.  IL must be a crime ridden state, of which I already knew that.

My rant on grocery stores is #1 having sale items listed in their ad and even on the first or 2nd day of the ad, either all sold out already or never got the items in at all.  Happened today at local Piggly Wiggly had .99 lb. chicken drumsticks or thighs.  NEVER got in at all.
#2 is either only 1 or 2 lines open with checker people vs. the rest self checkouts of which over 50% of the time need help from a checker person anyways to get items to ring up correctly or take a coupon,  buying alcohol, etc.

Theft must be pretty bad if they afford to install some kind of passive wheel lock system on 3-500 grocery carts.

I go to one of our high end groceries (Wegman's) principally to get the best, freshest produce in town (other than that, I shop Walmart and other cheaper grocery places)

They put a huge pile of their highest end groceries, bakery and prepared foods right on the way out of the store past the registers.  I always wonder how that stuff doesn't just get tossed in carts on the way out the doors.  There are cameras all over the place, so maybe that stops people.

Some of us were raised not to steal, but that seems a dying quality.
