collant change

well just flushed with distilled water and then added engine ice. started the bike up to warm and "burp", suffice it to say the radiator was like ol faithful and blowing coolant. when it settled down, i shut off the bike and had to refill? so i am thinking i have a bad thermostat and the coolant could not flow and so overheated.
is this a fair assessment? what did i do wrong? where do i go next

Check coolant cold and fill radiator. The half fill the reservoir. Drive it till it's fully warmed and let it cool down. Recheck and forget it.
