After my computer crash a couple weeks back, I installed and got operating a new HP unit. Don't really like it but was able to get it set up the way I wanted it to look and work. Well, we went to the Quad State gathering over near La Crosse and it was working fine when we left. I went to use it after we got back this afternoon and what a mess. Google Chrome looks nothing like it did before, my wireless keyboard doesn't work but when I plugged in a wired keyboard it works fine. I lost all my former home page shortcut icons and had a load of new crap shortcuts in place of the items I want. I finally got those removed and about half of the original installed, but it won't let me organize where they're located. I'd move them to where I had them and when I release the mouse it jumps back to its former position. Plus, it will only let me have 8 shortcuts instead of the 10 I formerly had. I wish MS wouldn't update without asking, I know there's a setting somewhere to prevent unsolicited updates but I simple don't recall how or where. At the moment my laptop is my only really good working computer, I figure sooner or later MS will screw that up as well.  tickedoff

New operating systems every year or two is a giant scam perpetrated on the public, and at our expense and their profit.   Everything since XP is crap (at least for simple users like me).  KISS is a motto to live by.

I do have a new computer with 10 (well 3 years old, but I hardly ever use it).  Pisses me off every time I use it.  I knew to refuse the 11 update.  Small consolation.

15 Shortcuts using Firefox. I just about never plan on using Bing (Microsoft's browser) and I don't use Chrome very often.

All I have is an iPhone and an iPad, they work for me and I barely know what they can do for me or to me. I can stand any more electronic aggravation in my life than I already have so most of what you guys are talking about is Greek to me. Ignorance is bliss, sometimes.

Just as a note: I shifted from Microsoft Products 10 or so years ago.   I had used their products from the basic start.  Built my own computers but it got less and less secure and it seemed like well, I was tired of butting up with their stuff.

I did purchase a Raspberry Pi and used it for some basic stuff (like running a video on a monitor at work when the other box died).

Then I shifted to Mac stuff.  Costs more, but seems more reliable and better for me on the long run.  I don't have to update the software each time they change but I do.

As I said, yes it costs more but......

One product I did not want to stop using was Microsoft Streets and Trips (Yes I know there is a/was a replacement, Basecamp but it was hard to start using).  So, for $75 I purchased a program called VMware and I can run Windows 7 on my Mac's and do my trip planning there.  No issues getting the routes to my older GPS devices (550, 660, and 665).   And I already had the Windows program.

I know, this is not for everyone and it does take some time to get use to the Mac OS but it seems to be a lot better than any of the Microsoft products and Safari seems very safe.

Just my experience.

Years ago I tinkered quite a bit with computers, nowadays I don't have time or patience for it. I ran a virtual drive in Linux with Windows installed, it was fun for awhile. I now have a Chromebook (2019?) which will not take updates anymore.
We got some cheap Gateway netbooks with Windows installed, I could run a dual/multi  boot on the new machines but probably won't My desktop is older hardware and runs very fast using Linux. My favored distro is Fedora, the free version of Red Hat commercial software.

am so sick of working on computers past 30 years at work.  Currently where I work the darn applications I go into (all 10 or so) all day long off and on needed every say 30-40 minutes,  require  you to be in  doing something EVERY 5-15 minutes.  If not,  u must sign off and sign back in with user id and passwords.  EVERY single day I scream at the darn PC every 20 minutes or so.  I bet I waste 1  hour near per day signing back in all the time which is NOT productive at all.  Security is important, but this is way overkill and dumb.  One federal reserve system (keyword FED), is the most irritating daily even if I am in doing something and ONLY out say 1-2 minutes not using it,  at times near daily,  it boots u out and forces u to sign back in.   What a piece of crap if you ask me.

not only that, but most of my 10 or so applications require changing passwords every 30 days,   such BS.  U talk about using keypass (to save passwords) into is a must since who can remember so many passwords needed  updated every 30 days or so.

I just want to do my job effectively as possible without wasting 1 of my 8 hrs. per day just typing in user id's and passwords.  DUMB.    Especially since some job duties need done ASAP NOW and wasting 2-3 minutes signing back in all the time all day long in critical times is so unproductive makes me SCREAM in misery.
