Hello, Well I am having an intermittent problem with the Tach not working, its been fine for about the last year or more and for no apparent reason stopped working when I started the bike today. The failure is the tach just does not work, all other functions are working lights etcetera.
I have checked the battery replaced the ICU with a spare checked continuity between ICU and headlight junction to Tach, thought I had the problem solved  but it arose again today.

Thanks for your help. Rick

Which model?

Aren't IS digital, and the others are mechanical. Either a dry or broken cable.

The tach failing can be a sign of a blown fuse or a sign that the alternator is not putting out.

In a similar rabbit hole,

The service manual is probably digitally on this forum some where,
Paper copy page 342 tach service for interstate
Page 337 for other models

Both are ignition control module based tacos
Trouble shooting directs you to check peak voltage, and wiring harness for shorts, then ICM ,,,,,,,

Good luck Cheesy

Valkyrie Norway seems to be gone, and the online archive doesn't allow download of the manual. I don't know anything else but direct email/file transfer. I love the PDF file, for travelling/laptop/tablet, and the hard copy to just thumb through.

The Bike is a 2001 Standard with just the 2 mounted instruments, The Speedometer is mechanical run by cable from front wheel, The Tachometer is electrical.

My tourer is having the same issue, but my headlight is also going out. My problem is in the ignition switch. Contacts need cleaning. If I wiggle the key on and off a few times is stays on. Just haven’t pulled switch apart to clean yet.

Stupid me, I was thinking speedometer the whole time. But I was thinking about the failing alt too as being a Tac issue, not that I've even encountered it personally.

Check the tach and coil grounds.

I've seen problems with these before.
