I was stationed in Ft. Hood in the 60s. Free time I would fish. Gar fishing was a great past time. It was illegal to release them. Long nose gar was the catch. Longest I ever caught was 60 inches. I would break the head off . I got to know a resident that would take them and his wife would cook them down and make fried fish sandwiches.

IMO is a shame to attempt to catch over 100lb. fish let alone over 200lbs. on ONLY 6lb. test line. So, u tire out the fish for 2+ hours and more than likely kill the fish due to exhaustion? I use 6lb. test routinely but all my fish caught are under 10lbs., mostly panfish and anything that swims by almost all under 10lbs. except an occasional northern pike or musky which usually snap my line off.

Gar are not a desireable fish to havevin your lake. They have a large appetite of small bass and perch. They will multiply and eat all the bait fish that bass and catfish must have to live on. We always kill them and throw them up on the bank. The coons and possums and buzzards gotta eat too.

I've caught them in the 5' range, that was scary enough in an 8' boat.
I can't imagine catching that monster!

We went after huge carp with spears.
They were inedible (esp with Detroit River pollution), and after a week in the sun some of the smelliest stuff on the planet.
