Therapeutic Road Tripping…

So now I have an idea... not a plan per se, mind you, but a general idea of how we'll proceed. It started with the decision to take an extra day to ensure I wasn't missing any of the preparatory details necessary for any road trip... Done... Laundry and some packing completed, so... The new tag decal arrived earlier than expected, so it was immediately installed! A couple of steps closer to KSU! That turned out to be a far better choice than I'd ever thought it could be!

By delaying departure, I also had the luxury of observing a football game with Tubby & bride... One I was secretly looking forward to celebrating along with stoking the fire of my desires for the ultimate prize being achieved at the season's conclusion... Things didn't work out that way, much to my initial dismay, but there was a hidden positive aspect to that unfortunate development...

When the vagaries of all sporting competition outcomes played out and disappointed half of all onlooking fans, yours truly was squarely in the frowning half... I realized I was much too much impacted! I'm not like those 'futbol' (soccer) fans who rip their shirts off, but bad enough... Maybe it’s time for me to give up fanhood all together…

I became a bit sullen, and I withdrew from interactions, choosing to retreat to my smart box rather than watch the painful conclusion... Not actually a 'problem' really, but to the extent it made my interactors pause and wonder what they might have done to cause this... Well, I was embarrassed, plus there was now yet another disappointment with which to cope.

I took some time for thinking and soul-searching in solitude on the porch in the darkness and for pondering my just re-illuminated personal flaw along with the probable source of that malady. Hmmm, this is likely the 'tip of the iceberg' too, I figured, so I wondered what to do about these developments...

Have my recent greatly increased social activities distracted me from the more important pursuit of personal improvement? Perhaps some tweaking is in order... Wherever I might find a solution, though, it would almost certainly occur on a road trip, so... time to get cracking!

I awoke in plenty of time for a pre-dawn departure if I hustled just a bit; however, … I decided instead some fence-mending would be appropriate, plus final preparations could be leisurely made with a reduced likelihood of missing any necessary steps by the addition of an extra day. Besides, I still needed to take a longcut anyway since more time continued to be available than what I would need for a direct ride to the DRU.

In the back of my mind was a nagging, gnawing notion that perhaps it was past time for this ponderous ponderer to go find some shade high up on a mountain and spend some quality think time. Naturally, we still carry that venerable multi-purpose nap chair, so... I was also entertaining another longcut possibility, too.

The more than three-week period between the DRU and the FCR would offer plenty of time for a hamburger run... out to Greybull, WY. Over three-thousand miles from Madison, IN, to Robbinsville, NC, by way of Greybull. Perfect! We could even stop by Brenda's Tumbleweed Cafe in Watauga, SD, on one of the legs. A rider does have to have energy, ya know, and certain dining locations do add considerable zest to the experience...

OK, so now we had a mission and purpose, and we knew a road trip must figure into any solution. KSU this morning and we were off! Of course, it did get hot later, and it was muggy all the way. All but the last hour or so was tolerable, though... Most importantly, however, we arrived safe and sound in plenty of time to scoot just up the road for some BBQ. Yep, it turned out to be a '12' kind of day for sure!

I just returned from Montana passing through Graybull WY by way of the Bear Tooth, Chief Joseph and over Power River Pass to Buffalo WY and then across South Dakota on 212 - 30 - 14 to Madison Wisconsin. I am ready to return but it will have to wait until next year. I have my eyes on West Virginia.

I will have to stop by Watauga, SD next time.  It is only 1 1/2 hours north of Faith SD, one of my favorite stop overs, known for Sue the T. rex. So next time we will have to run route 12.

Gene,

Little did I know I was chatting with such a veteran traveler that day in Escanaba when we first met! I’ve searched my photo files online, but the Wi-Fi here is more than a bit lacking, so… I couldn’t’ find a pic (and I don’t recall the name of the place) of the ‘best hamburger in Wyoming’, according to the person who first told me of that eatery/drinkery… I wouldn’t know if that’s true, but I can say it’s a darned good sandwich! The ambience ain’t bad either…

The hamburger place in Greybull is actually a bar & grill located on the right half a block from the traffic light in town where US 14 makes a right turn towards Cody… if you’re coming from Sheridan. Not the only eatery in town, but the one I always visit at least once on each of my many stops there.

Brenda’s Tumbleweed Café is a bit harder to find… Dusty Roads and I did a U-turn to get there, as it completely slipped up on us. West of Mobridge, SD, and just east of Watauga ‘in the middle of nowhere’ and looking nothing like a café if one isn’t paying close attention… Heck, it doesn’t even look like a café at all to this not-so-keen observer! I did find a couple of pics of that place, though…

Brenda’s Tumbleweed Café:

Brenda, a very nice lady who can also rustle-up some seriously good grub!

Brenda’s business hours…

Be advised, however, you won’t find any EVs or patrons wearing masks at Brenda’s, and certainly no high-dollar limos or SUVs parked outside. No discussions in a positive way of defunding the police will be heard either… What hooked this curious diner, though, was a ‘Review’ posted about the place… “Don’t pull the coffee pot out before the brewing stops… You might get a boot in the caboose!” Now that sure sounded like my kind of place!!!

Of course, if you’re unable to find either, you could always return to the ‘Yooper’ and enjoy the weather… I’ve copied the forecast below for you…

Bruce,
A long cut through Greybull should be very enjoyable!  I remember those great burgers at that bar and grill!  They sure were good!

Avanti,
If you are heading to West Virginia, you might want to spend a night at the Mineral Springs Motel in Webster Springs.  Easy price for a decent motel.  Whatever road you take to get in or out of there will be enjoyable!
If you get to Kingwood, WV, check out the Heldreth Motel.  There is a restaurant in the parking lot there that has good food, and all the roads around there are enjoyable.
