I saw the above yesterday and checked my iPhone and turned it off.

After reading more, it seems that you have to have the phones in direct contact to make it work.  But I will have to look it up again.

However, if you have an iPhone, I suggest you provide some feedback to Apple about the intent of this new "thing".   I will do so in a few minutes.

You may provide Apple with some feedback here.

If you read all the way to the bottom they
mention that they're totally wrong about the feature
giving out any of your information to strangers.

A friend had some files on her iphone she needed to
give me. We used airdrop(?)  to make the files jump
to my phone by just bringing the phones near
each other. We had to adjust the permissions on
her phone to allow my phone to connect to it.

This is like that, only for contacts.

I don’t usually check what the updates are for and most of the time it says something generic like it fixes issues or makes usage easier to simply say it. Many people have their phones set to automatically update and don’t really have any idea what goes on.

Maybe a little paranoia is involved but like I said earlier, better safe than sorry and when I read an article saying the a law enforcement agency issues a warning I kinda read up on it.

This was just a heads up for folks.

Just wanted to add this; like I said previously we’ve (my wife) had her card skimmed a couple times, we assume from just walking around the store. Which leads me to this consideration, if you’re walking around the store or public place and wearing your phone on your hip or maybe even in your pocket can someone get the information off your phone just by being in close proximity?

If you went to your phone and adjusted the permissions so that "anyone" could do
proximity operations on your phone, then yes.

Yes. When I did mine it was already active/already on from the update. I had to turn it off.

If your phone is set to automatic updates, it may update during a time you’re not paying attention, like overnight. You’d receive a message the phone updated but typically no other info other than *see what’s new* or something like that which usually don’t list or go into details on updates or new features.

I think they added a new feature "namedrop" and that it is active. It  requires
you to use it on purpose, it isn't passive. Did you use it some before you
turned it off?

*Pointless Religious Rant*

I've always found the parallels between Apple and Harley humorous - they both sell inferior obsolete technology at greatly inflated prices to a rabidly fanatical cult like consumer base...

No, not that I know of.

I downloaded an update, then my wife downloaded the same the next day. The next day after that she got a “message” from a friend or cousin or something about the turn off so we turned ours off. Today I saw this article.

Didn’t know iPhones were inferior and obsolete…and I’m not being sarcastic…seriously. I pretty much thought they were all the same.

I've never owned a cell phone in my life.

I've only talked on one maybe 4 times (borrowed to call home), but I don't know how to work one.

How come they put the off button on the side where you hold it?   That's pretty irritating.

For what it's worth, if I were to have an iPhone (Actually I do, but it's government issued, and not by choice, but that's another story) this new namedrop thing wouldn't concern me...

LOL!  I'm unclear on that post.  Is that a personal attack, a compliment, or just a casual observation?   Huh?

I'll take it as a compliment (Typed from a Windows computer from Google Chrome browser)...

I really just prefer Linux based kernel systems over BSD based kernel systems... Wink

This one does seem to be a little more serious for you Apple folks - Be sure to update to 17.1.2 pretty quickly...

(Or the latest updates for macOS computers, they appear to be in scope as well)

https://thehackernews.com/2023/12/zero-day-alert-apple-rolls-out-ios.html

(And us Google Chrome users aren't immune, be sure to update Chrome to the latest as well no matter the OS you're running it on - https://thehackernews.com/2023/11/zero-day-alert-google-chrome-under.html )

I upgraded recently, I guess to 17.1.1... anyhow... the upgrade
caused me to have "voicemail" with text transcriptions of
the messages left.

I noticed while I was upgrading to 17.1.2 and I turned
it off.

People expect their voicemails to be responded to,
which is hard to do if you don't know you have it...

One of the updates completely changed the notifications tones and did not allow you to change it back. I always go for the latest update.
