Wintering In Winnie...?

Frankly, that's not something I had seriously considered before. Nothing wrong with this modest-sized village, of course, it’s just a convenient place along the way where we’d often paused briefly but always passed through over the years on our way somewhere else. On the other hand, there naturally would be no conflict with any other 'plans' in play, so… It’s simply that I’d never thought of it in the context of a ‘destination’.

I had been thinking we'd most likely just be wandering around along the southern tier of our nation throughout the northern hemisphere's 'thermally challenged' period of the annual cycle... Yep, I'd just figured we'd be stopping here and there in more commodious and expansive digs as opportunities and 'fanny fatigue' inclined us… And as the urge to continue the illusive pursuit of the perfection of creating quality biscuits ‘n gravy struck me…

Not a new ‘plan’ at all, as that is actually fairly typical of our winter ‘campaigns’. The details of our annual coddiewomples always vary considerably, but the overall theme of the outings pretty much follows the same general pattern each year, as weather, and especially temperatures, do significantly limit our range of options.

Ah, but those surprise events that can pop up suddenly and lead us in entirely unexpected directions in pursuit of totally unanticipated things... Like all the ripple-effects of losing a simple little bag from the cargo stacked on our girl while in-transit... So, here we are… In Winnie, TX, with a new set of points to ponder.

Being inclined towards the impetuous side of the scale, I often jump right into action before time and serious consideration have produced better thought-out, more comprehensive reactions to situations. Realizing I would need another pair of chaps before I could ride very far, my thoughts immediately focused on that glaring necessity with laser sharpness.

I did resist the kneejerk impulse to ride back to Beaumont that very day and 'shop' for a new leather garment; instead, I ordered new ones online for delivery here at the motel. “Not bad,” I'd congratulated myself... Such an action also avoided the risks of getting hopelessly lost or worse in the always frenetic surface road traffic of that semi-metropolis.

While checking the e-mail notice of processing and expected delivery date sent by my chaps’ vendor, I glanced at an ad for a pair of street shoes being offered that appeared to be exactly what I needed to replace the ones also lost in that bag...I ordered them, as well... And dangitall, I received a different delivery date...

Double dang! If I'd ordered them both at the same time... Yeah, another boo-boo of sorts. I'm not going to order anything else for a while, though, just in case. I've already picked up a replacement, extra-long bungie to complete the set (one of the cords had inexplicably managed to remain attached to the ‘luggage deck’ made and given to us by Big Wolf).

I still need another 'travel bag', too, in which to carry stuff, and there is a small chance I might order one of those online... But not right away! Heck, I can always stop and shop at one of Sam Walton's mercantile extravaganzas and find something usable. In fact, one of the larger bags currently in use came from just such a place in Colorado once upon a time, complements of our illustrious friend, Trout Dude...

Nope, I'm going to hold off ordering anything other than pizza or a Door Dash meal through the web for a while in hopes of freeing myself from the tyrannical tether of a fixed 'ship to' location! I like this motel and the owners here fine, but I'm not very keen on the notion of 'living here' for any longer than I can help... I don’t think… Maybe I need to reconsider that… Nah… Or…?

Geez, instead of working myself into a lather over all of this, I'm thinking hard at the moment about another meander across the road for a Shiner Bock or three... That always seems to help... Hmmm, now that would be another advantage to staying here…

Thanks as always for taking us along, however briefly, on your adventures!

When Mr. and Mrs. Glue had their annual get together in Friendswood I made it a point of meandering through East Texas back roads instead of the super slab, invariably going through Winnie on my way to the Bolivar Peninsula, then taking the ferry to Galveston Island and coming to Friendswood from the south.

Admittedly, Winnie was always just a gas and snack stop before the long run along the coast that was the main event, but I can see how it would be a pleasant enough place to plant one's butt for a spell...

Have a Shiner for me too, those are also currently forbidden for medical reasons...

Trials and tribulations of our two wheeled standard bearer.  Could have happened to anyone re the lost bag Bruce.  I would think that possibly it was an elastic strap failure.
Next time you have the opportunity to rent a spot to make biscuits try this recipe.  Self rising flour and heavy whipping cream.  Two ingredients only.  I acutually made some and it worked.  Of course mine were not nearly as pleasing to the eye as normally found on the table.  However they worked well with butter and jelly.

I don't think you have enough bear in you to hibernate for long!  Occasional Regular naps are another story altogether.

Glad you're following your instincts, and having a good time doing it!   cooldude

Carry on, Bruce.

Serk,

I'm quite familiar with the route along the Bolivar Peninsula... It's been a favorite Houston Bypass route for this traffic averse rider, as well. My recollection of having met you for the first time was aboard the ferry you mentioned! I was traveling once upon a time long, long ago with Strider and his posse on our way to Mr. & Mrs. Glue's event... and there you were...

It would be a pleasure to dedicate my next Shiner Bock to you!!! I hope you enjoy it... It's the least I can do for the compliments and always positive replies you provide!

Terry,

That biscuit recipe sounds simple enough for even this non-cook to handle! Alas, I've never aspired to make biscuits from scratch myself... There is simply no way I can see for me to ever approach anything nearly as good as those provided by Pillsbury. Gravy, on the other hand, has become an elusive, long-standing ambition of mine. However, ... it just might be I'm enjoying the pursuit more than I would any actual success... Oh well, whatever is propelling me onward, I'm going to continue the quest and see where it takes us...

Don,

Thanks, my friend! Staying safe is item #1 on my to-do list! It can get a bit scary out there now and then, but my guardian angel is really good at what she does!!!

Seth,

Looks like you've definitely got me pegged! I eschew anything for more than a month, and I usually frown even upon that length of stay. Yep, naps are definitely an item I enjoy and practice frequently... I have no idea how long I might be able to continue the vision quest coddiewomple, but I don't see myself quitting until I simply am unable to go on... And that's a long way off in the distant future, I do hope!
