I was there a month ago.... it is awesome to stand there and visualize the happennings and knowing that the world changed at that very place.   Very humbling to stand there and see and smell the very air those soldiers breathed.   They had to be feeling soooo helpless.

I was there in 1973.  While attached to the USS Patrick Henry (which was based out of Guam) the off crews were stationed in Hawaii.  I was in a barracks on Ford Island.

The ship and the monument to the US Arizona was right there every day we went somewhere. I was also amazed at the other "wrecks" that were still around Ford Island.

In my youth I was did a lot of reading, science fiction and military novels and history.  I never ever thought I would be at the center of the event that began World War II.

Just a couple of the pictures from the summer of 1973.   Not the best but....

The Arizona Memorial

The USS Utah Memorial

And I believe this is a picture of the flag flying over the USS Arizona as seen from my barracks.  Again, 1973.

It is absolutely amazing to me the few media outlets that even talked about this.

When I wanted a new military assignment from my first at Maxwell AFB AL (it wasn't the State, I loved it down there, except for summer heat, it was my boss who was a bit unhinged), I looked longingly at Hawaii.  But everyone told me I was so junior I'd never get an assignment there.  So I put in for Korea, Philippines, and Turkey.  (USAF JAG do their own assignments from the Pentagon, not HQ USAF Personnel in TX)

So shortly I got a personal phone call from Maj Jack Rives in officer assignments who says he'd never seen a volunteer statement like mine and was wondering if something is wrong down at Maxwell.  You never say anything bad about your boss, so I just said I wanted to go overseas and put in that request because I knew I'd get a quick assignment.  And I did.  Off to Turkey I went (which I enjoyed so much, I first extended, then did an in-country move for a second tour there).  I was sent DTY (temporary duty) all over Europe from those assignments.

Some years later, before I separated, Jack Rives got promoted to Maj Gen, The USAF Judge Advocate General (top dog lawyer).

At the Arizona state capital building in Phoenix is one of the big guns from the Arizona (on the left) and one from the Missouri (on the right).

I've often wished I could visit the memorial but it doesn't look like it will happen in my lifetime. Being just shy of 4 yrs. old, I was too young at the time of the attack to understand all the hubbub. However, over the next few years I became very aware of something very evil going on in the world. I feel that unless the U.S. takes a different approach to our economic and military strength, there will be a WWIII. If there is, WWIV will be fought with bows and arrows.

So, I went and checked and I found the compound bow and I checked and found these two as well

Oh, the smaller recurved one is a Browning Nomad, if I remember correctly.  The other was one I got for the wife so she could shoot with me at the range.

So, all I need are some more arrows and some practice.  I will need several bails of hay for a backstop.

Very nice bows.   cooldude

I had an uncle who was an accomplished bow hunter.

He was also an accomplished rifleman, but found bow hunting more challenging.
