Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

Hey John,

Not much to update... I decided to just hunker down and sit out the holidays in Del Rio, TX. I was thinking of meandering farther west, but... In spite of those brand-spanking new chaps I went to some lengths to acquire, I let the forecast for colder temps in the generally higher elevations of New Mexico dissuade me from venturing beyond this oasis in the midst of extremes.

I'd like to report that I've joyfully continued my pursuit of the mastery of biscuits 'n gravy... but that would be highly inaccurate. I have had a failed attempt, but nothing at all upon which to brag. I'm not discouraged really, but that set-back has dampened my enthusiasm considerably for the time-being. Mostly I'm just enjoying laying around, grocery shopping now and then, watching movies on the tube, and...

My Airbnb host is a Border Patrol officer. A really nice guy, intelligent, tactful, and easy to chat with. He took me on a tour of this town, and he gave me a close-up look at a section of the border wall begun under 'W' (I didn't remember that!) and another section begun under Trump. He also showed me where the already bought but uninstalled sections of steel fencing had been staged for installation but canceled by Biden and removed from the area.

I enjoyed the non-judgmental, open-minded way he communicated and avoided lecturing or trying to influence my own thoughts on the matter of the fence, immigration generally, and illegal immigration in particular. It seems that most folks consider themselves to be 'experts' on these matters; the same folks posing simple, straight-forward solutions for solving everything... I'm not one of those, and neither is he. We just enjoyed a free-flow of ideas, thoughts, questions, and moral wrestling bouts with our own conscience experiences. I could sure use a lot more of that!!!

There is one football game I plan to watch, but no others. My evolution from a 'sports fan' to one totally uninterested in sports of any type is nearing completion. It would be amusing if it wasn't downright embarrassing to admit how at one time I allowed any of that to actually matter... Oh well...

So, what comes next...? I truly don't know. I do expect to get around to pondering some more on all of this immigration stuff that this rider finds to be most perplexing... It's easy to pick a talking point from the ideological kindred spirit talking heads on TV, then spout memorized one-liners in a foolish attempt to verify intellectualism... However, I find that to be frightfully unfulfilling and hardly worth any bother at all.

Nope, I'll just continue to think deeply and broadly about it and see where that takes me... When we start with genuine questions instead of pre-programed answers to validate, the exercise is considerably more difficult, but the end product is always far more satisfying... Another advantage to becoming comfortable with unknowns and free from boundaries or ideological limits... is the actual realization of truth now and then.

My desire eat biscuits far exceeds my talent or ability to create them, ’same goes for gravy! Please don’t give up though, I have high hopes of one day experiencing a sample of your work! In case we all get too busy, let me wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year, it seems like a wink and a nod and both will come and be over!

Bruce,

Since you're hanging out in that area, have you been over to see Judge Roy Bean's place in Langtry?

I saw the movie with Paul Newman when I was a kid and liked it.

In 2005 and then again in 2007 I got the chance to check it out.

I thought that it was pretty interesting.

I also liked the Pecos River gorge and bridge on US 90.

Got to admit I've not seen the movie with Paul Newman, going to have to check it out.

While not the main character, Walter Brennen does an excellent job of portraying Judge Bean in "The Westerner", one of my favorite flicks.

Ive been to the JRBean museum several times.  One thing always impressed me was most of the exhibits talked about how corrupt Judge Roy bean was.   When newcomers would show up Judge Roy would invent some trumped ip charge and throw them in jail.    Their fine would be ever how much money they had.    Ha
