That was awesome, thanks for posting, it can save someones life.  cooldude

I was working on my boat and it was winter. Built a structure around it and used the blue tarps for covering a wood frame. Then for heat since it was 20 degrees out, used a space heater that burned kerosene. It took the chill off things and kept the space warm about 65 and I figured not being sealed really well for  a building it would have enough fresh ventilation.

Well one day felt a bit whoosy, that was all, nothing that I couldn't have ignored. So I continued to work, but then felt I  the need to stop for a few minutes, so went to get some coffee. Well when I got out into the fresh air and started to pickup I knew what the problem was. Carbon Monoxide poisoning and I was shocked that I did not even really know it. Even had the slight headache when in the fresh air.

Now I understood why people could be in the backseat of their car and found dead without knowing why. I was surprised at the stealth of how it happened and if I had been a bit more concentrated on what I was doing it could have been the end.

Good post ! Thanks !

A coworker and I went fishing on a really cold day in the Raritan River in NJ. Back in ‘79/‘80

We rented a rickety row boat and tied it of to a bridge piling to do some jigging. We were all bundled up in hooded parkas and just generally miserable.
Along comes a twin engine power boat with some A-hole who kicks up a big wake and sends us rocking.
The bow of this old wooden boat literally breaks off and now we’re drifting away trying to keep the boat from taking on water. We rowed backwards to shore, left the boat and walked back to the boat house where we gave the guy a ration of $hit. Needless to say we were both exhausted.

All this time I had a charcoal powered Jonee hand warmer in a parka pocket.

We got into my ‘73 Chevelle and headed up the Garden State Parkway towards home. He was asleep in minutes and shortly I was getting really lite headed and pulled over to the shoulder to do some jumping jacks to wake up.

The hand warmer bounced out of my parka pocket and hit the ground. That’s when I realized we were getting carbon monoxide poisoning and opened all the windows while yelling at him to wake up.

Problem solved,  we got home with no fish but at least alive.

long ago in 70's ice fishing growing up as a kid we went ice fishing in our 3 man sno boat with a coleman  fuel heater inside even with the 5x5 inch vent flap open at the top, as a young kid, I got really really sleepy inside.  Even back then knew about carbon monoxide or lack therof.  Went outside in the cold and woke up much better after a few hours.  those darn heaters can be dangerous.

I have a rather large HOT heater that throws out tons of heat like 30000 btu's on a 20lb. propane tank and used that in my 20x24 garage for 5 hours or so sitting 10 feet away from me or so.  Never got groggy, but it surely made everything sweat and very DAMP in the garage when say 10 degrees outside after a few hours was guessing 50 degrees inside my 20x24 garage.    I left the back garage door open a few inches to let the windy coldness come in just in case.

Living on the southern tip of an island in the Detroit River, we used to see ice fishing shanties on ice that broke off and began floating out into Lake Erie toward Toledo.  Fishermen inside oblivious.  Pretty funny, except the Coast Guard often had to go out to their rescue.

What did ja catch?

Some big nasty carp and 40lbs of ice.  Grin

I've got a 30KBTU NG/propane space heater down in the basement (bought it to help keep MIL warm), 20K or even 10K would probably be large enough. I use it to keep the basement 65-75 F (very much on the low side for power settings). It does have an O2  sensor - I'm very cautious / concious about the CO threat.
