Now What...? Funny how well things can go sometimes. Other times, however, with even a modest amount of hindsight, we can clearly spot many opportunities squandered that could have produced vastly different perhaps even better outcomes. A current example... When weather is a major factor complicating all decisions regarding travel aboard a legendary scooter (and when isn't it?) everything gets... well, at times it can become downright bewildering. Naturally, appointments or any sort of commitment that includes specific time requirements add to the dilemma by squeezing fixed time constraints into the mix of variables already under consideration. In particular, weather extremes always give us pause, but during truly unusual periods they can become outsized impediments to the blissful experience of unfettered wandering... Especially when combined with all the other factors, desires, and opportunities that may unexpectedly spring up along the way. The cold, mostly, induced us to hunker down for a while in Del Rio, TX, this winter. Not wanting to remain stationary in Florida led us to venture west with all sorts of options before us. Forecasts of cold intertwined with unseasonable bouts of moisture unexpectedly stopped us dead in our tracks. Of course, those are always to be anticipated as likely to happen occasionally during winter. Normally, on the other hand, 'windows of opportunity' will also arise giving us slots through which we can slip and make our way towards... wherever it is we yearn to cruise. We venture forth anyway with the hope and faith we can 'work around' whatever surprises pop up in our path, and we usually do so successfully. It's an indisputable truism that the more details we attempt to factor into any undertaking, though, the more challenging execution of a plan becomes! Those increases in complexity/difficulty don't seem to be linear either... more like they’re closer to exponential! Enough of that jumbled mix of details and our thoughts can become scrambled into a most undesirable omelet... Naturally, at some point in the future we'll easily see what we could or should have done instead of what we actually did... That’s not all that helpful, though, when staring into the dense fog of the uncertain and constantly evolving future...Nope, we make our decisions with the vague, imperfect, incomplete knowledge available for foresight, but we are always critiqued with 20/20 hindsight. Having an inclination towards hunkering down, when circumstances dictate, in relative comfort and the vague pretense of actually 'being home' away from home; rental houses, cabins, apartments, and the like present a nice alternative to motels. We’ve paused in all manner of those in many different towns throughout the US and Canada over the years, and we’ve never had an unpleasant stay. Booking something for a week or longer often offers discounts, with monthly rentals offering the most. With that choice, though, we're automatically forced to balance... and try to time the steps of execution... the factors of frugality, arrival/departure time management, any or all commitments, and all that with volatile weather 'slots'; at times doing all of those aspects can require circus level talent to juggle! I'm at just such a juncture this very moment... My time here is running out, but the opportunity to extend it even longer has unexpectedly become available. Should I leave as now planned or stay a few more days? Another week? Departing ‘on schedule’ will have us riding in 20* temps some of the time. Extending only a couple of days will put us stopping for more than one night in a motel due to moisture in the forecast. Almost another week appears to hold some promise, but forecasts that far in advance always change and evolve, and baring any blind luck, no choice (guess!) can be perfect when made with only limited foresight... So, here I sit scratching my noodle wondering whether to extend my stay here yet again, or... Pondering so intently can produce a most distracting and frustrating condition, but thankfully I've learned how to postpone temporarily the pulling of the trigger before riding off an emotional cliff: I simply drop what I'm doing and undertake some needed chores. That doesn't solve the problem, of course, but it does allow for some head-clearing and mental refreshment before diving back into the bubbling caldron of attempting to make a solid stab at a choice based solely upon hazy foresight and/or guesswork...
I think I'll dig out the clippers I carry in my ‘Trout Dude bag’ nowadays and give myself a long overdue haircut... I’ll probably do some laundry, too… This could take a while… DDT (12)

If there is an upcoming appointment of the "Must be there" variety, much as I'm sure you're loathe to leave Ali behind, possibly Southwest Airlines to the appointment, then back to where ever Ali is to continue the coddiwomple as weather cooperates? Just a thought..... P.S. What is this "haircut" of which you speak?

It’s such a shame we live in a world where travel further south than the Rio Grand is not a viable or healthy option. I’m convinced that there is much to discover south of the border but I’m equally convinced I’ll never get to exercise that option. Maybe, if we ever get the border under control, the Cartels will start offering travel protection packages for gringo’s who want to see Mexico? Maybe not!

Serk,
Excellent idea! I haven't had to resort to air travel before, but some improvisational adjustments have had to be employed on rare occasions over the years. You definitely have a 'wide angle view' of situations and possible remedies, so you'll do quite well when your time comes for this sort of random lifestyle...
As for haircuts... I've known from our very first meeting that you're not a practioner, so... No explanation would have any effect, I don't think... Just know that some of us are hopeless habitual squares!!!
DDT (12)
John,
I hear ya, my friend! I've wanted to cruise around down there almost as long as I've been riding. I've actually come close a couple of times in years past to taking that chance. I'd even considered shortly after retiring signing up for a guided/accompanied group tour down there. I don't know if those are even offered nowadays.
I've talked to several riders who have done that, and the majority of them all spoke highly of the experience. Once in a while, however, I've also chatted with some who've had terrible experiences... The cartels are but one of the problems... There are also sometimes guerrilla fighters in some areas, gangs in others, and there have even been reports of LEOs hassling foreigners demanding/extorting bribes mostly.
Alas, I'm also unwilling to take the risks associated with such a venture. I'm told there are some incredible sights to be viewed, and I already know I'd enjoy the culture, music, people, cuisine, everything really that would come with such an adventure, but... Fortunately, there is more in the US and Canada than one person could wander to in two lifetimes, so... Unlikely I'll ever make it there either...

Excellent read. It appears that occasionally deep truths come to the surface in our dilemmas. Although we like to see you as one who is never captive to planning or structure it appears that life is what it is. You appear to be managed by short term plans and unwavering commitments that have occasionally been thrust upon you.
It is truly a struggle trying, sometimes almost hopelessly, to hold to the freedom one seeks at whatever level one finds himself.
I wish you good fortune in this most recent struggle. Winter has inserted her stirring shovel into many of our lives of late.
Continue to answer the call of the wind. It does the rest of us good to hear you do.

Carl,
What a nice reply!!! Thank you very much for your insightful and most kind remarks. Yes, as you mentioned I do try to keep my life as free from the snarls and distractions of planning as possible... Also as you mentioned, some of that is just part of being out and about in a shared world. Necessary? Desirable? Again, as you mentioned, life is what it is... I do what 'planning' I have to, but little more as far as I'm able.
Following those chores I undertook; I was able to return to the decision-making task and make a call... and that was to stay put five additional days. A day later the forecast had changed again, and it by then appeared a one day earlier departure would have been better, but... I've made the call and the road awaits... On to the next surprise as we answer the call of the wind...

I very much enjoy reading about your exploits and travels, even though I haven't commented on your posts before. I lived in Del Rio for 2 years from Oct of 1983 to Oct 1985 when I was stationed at Laughlin AFB. I enjoyed my time there so I can understand why you've decided to extend your stay. I only remember one time we got snow and that was in Jan 1985. The wife and I did try to travel to San Antonio for a weekend about once a month because there wasn't a lot to do in Del Rio back then. I'm sure things have changed and there's a lot more to do now. We did enjoy Lake Amistad and the occasional day trip to Acuna across the border. I had a Yamaha 500 back in those days and enjoyed riding almost all year round. One thing I do remember is the roads there wore out tires faster than any place I've ever lived. The roads were basically tar with gravel poured on top. I hope that has changed. Anyway whatever you decide I hope your travels continue to be enjoyable and you continue to entertain us with your stories. Take care and keep the shiny side up. Larry R aka DragonRider

Larry,
Thanks for the nice reply! You sure have figured out how to make my head swell!!! I do very much appreciate your kind words, though...
Yes, Del Rio is a sleepy little oasis along the non-Interstate stretch between San Antonia and El Paso. Not much action still for younger military aged folks, but for us geezers looking to hole-up out of the weather and reflect some, it's dang near perfect!
I've been through here many times over the years, so at one time or another I've visited all of the places you and others have mentioned. There is some charm to the area and its people, and if one doesn't seek certain, specific things, there's plenty of variety and novelty to satisfy curiosity.
People are always a big draw for this traveler, though, and right here at this casita my host is a very interesting guy, and we've had several conversations since my arrival. Much to learn and consider when we glimpse life through the eyes of others and not just our own...

I lived in Del Rio for 2 years from Oct of 1983 to Oct 1985 when I was stationed at Laughlin AFB. While on active duty USAF, I had occasion to be flying for duty with a layover at Laughlin AFB. It was hot and desolate and full of scrub. I was glad to leave after a couple hours.

What aircraft did you fly in on? I was assigned to the 47th Security Police Squadron. I was one of two K-9 handlers assigned to Laughlin. Yes it was hot and desolate on the base, especially in the summertime. I remember once the scrub brush/tumbleweeds were so bad that the base commander had to have Civil Engineering Roads and Grounds go all around the base to clean them up. It was so bad they were blowing across the runway and taxiways causing a hazard (FOD) to the T-37s and T-38s. The tumble weeds were also piling up in the base housing areas. Back then we didn't have a very good perimeter fence so they just blew from the desert right onto the base. It was quite an experience being stationed there, one I'll never forget. Larry R

What aircraft did you fly in on? I can't remember for sure. Could have been a C141, or a KC10 tanker. It was a long flight so couldn't have been a C130. I was assigned to the 47th Security Police Squadron.I worked with the cops many times (JAG). I did training (use of force, probable cause, search and seizure, procedure, law of armed conflict (Hague and Geneva) and treatment of POWs), and with SPOI assisted in investigations, worked on searches, warrants, and trial prep. Shot with them all the time too. It was during transition from the Smith Model 15s to the Berettas, but they liked shooting my .44 magnum and M1 Garand.

I worked with the cops many times (JAG).My K-9 was a Narcotics detector Dog for the first half of my career. I worked closely with JAG to obtain Probable Cause search authority when my dog alerted on a vehicle, Dorm room door, etc. I also worked with AFOSI on several drug cases. I've been retired from active duty for 24 years now, but I still remember those days and wish I could go back and relive some of them. Unfortunately time marches on and we have to leave the past behind. Thanks for responding to my posts. It's good to know there are others in the community who also served. Larry R

I worked with the AFOSI plenty too. A couple very weird cases (gay Sgt trying to adopt a Turkish street urchin boy), and the largest Commissary inventory fraud and theft in USAF history. With months of overhead video to watch for days (and days).
My military service had plenty of stress, hardship and hard work, but it was clearly the best job and times I ever had. Even marching in a large formal pass in review in 8" of unmowed grass was fun (and embarrassing).
Retirement is great, and I don't want to go back to work, but I miss those days too. Lots of photos on my walls.

Speaking of air travel..... My uncle Hiram Bice rode BMW's most of his adult life. He died 2022 at sge 93. He rode motorcycles till late 70's in age and started having balance issues. He retired from Continnental airlines and could pretty much fly for free. In his early 70's He rode his BMW starting in Houston Texas and rode to the 4 corners of the United States. He would ride 3 or 4 days and leave his Beamer at a local BMW dealership where ever he was and fly home for a couple days and fly back and continue. I loved the concept.

Terry,
I'll only ride in +36* when it's absolutely necessary! Below 0* is when I don't even want to be inside or anywhere nearby any location thusly chilled... Nope, when the leaf color starts to turn, my thoughts of riding further south leap to the fore!!! I do love to visit Calgary and Canada generally, but... only in summer!
Any thoughts on making IZane this year? It'll be the tenth anniversary of you returning our girl to me in Asheville... If you can't make it, I may show up in Calgary to hoist a few with you and reminisce...!!!

I assumed it was a generated image because the ice in the beard is too perfect.
And if it was real, the half gallon of ice on his face with riding windchill would mean frostbite with too much pain for photography.

GOUT!!! If I cant get this crap to settle down, I'm going nowhere. So all I can say at this point is stay tuned I guess. Having said that, I've been pain free for a few weeks now but the previous 6 months have been bad. Also trying to figure out how to at least semi-retire and that ain't going so well. Anyway, sorry for the late response.

Terry,
Sorry to hear about your ailments! Another member sent me a request to share the following with you, FWIW... "Prescription Allopurinol for gout and magnesium every day." I have no personal experience with any of that, but he does... Anyway, good luck!
I do hope to see you this summer... somewhere, sometime... I have no plans, of course, but I do have good intentions... Plus, I'd just plain like to see y'all again and recall past glories... Perhaps even make a few more. We'll see what actually unfolds...

Yeah, thanks for the info. Been on it twice and it's total torture for me. I actually asked to go back on it a second time because a pharmacist I know told me to try it again and suffer it out. You have know idea the suffering. But like I said, the last few weeks I've been pain free even though there is still swelling. I'm actually scared to go anywhere as I don't know when it will flare up which usually happens when I'm sleeping. Anyway, I hope my system is adjusting so I can resume life.
