I wouldn't ride that style of bike, but I can sympathize with his forks being that badly damaged....

Up here Green Bay and surrounding communities have ox cart trails they pass off as streets. My '08 Highlander had no rattles when I moved here in the summer of 2019. When I traded cars last December it sounded like a truckload of marbles rolling down the street. When riding the bike anywhere, you look like a drunk cuz you're swerving all over to avoid the bad spots. They specialize in manholes that are a minimum 3" below the paved surface and are staggered so it's nearly impossible to miss them. Add in lousy weather and the cold temps and you have a lovely place to live.

The one thing the roadbuilders could to make roads better -
BUILD THEM LIKE THE GERMANS BUILD THE AUTOBAHN !!!!!!!
Then the roads would not be so prone to have water get below the surface (when the water freezes, it expands and then cracks the roadway).
Yes they would cost more than current standards, but they would save so much money (not just on filling potholes either).

Those single digit temps we endured couple weeks back did NOT do the side streets here any favors at all. So far-I am NOT a highway engineer-the main roads/highways appear to be good. And I realize any good left on the highways IS subject to varying degrees of change in the Wrong direction! RIDE SAFE.

Due to snow/rain plus temps going from really low to way above normal, our hwy and city roads have suffered. Thankfully most of the city streets are maintained enough to not have holes in them. At least for now. The chip seal put on the hwy roads generally keep them in sort of good condition. BUT do tend to wear out tires quickly.

agree, more roads in WI are still better, on average, than nearby IL roads. I travel south into IL around Freeport area and even the sides roads off main hwy. are all still gravel and dirt county roads. That is going back into the 1800 era for sure.

if used in your area, brine destroys vehicles, bridges and roads. politicians love it, gives them reason to raise taxes to repair roads with vote getting union workers, damaged roads which they caused. damage to vehicles, they like that also, then that keeps local shops busy doing repairs, more tax dollars and a business paying property taxes. some states actually have stopped using it. NJ still uses it, and sprays if the word snow is on the news, even thought the temps at at or above freezing, they are out there spraying, OT for workers u know. Another reason to avoid Dirt County - I rarely have the chance to ride in a 1800 vehical they all been munched - for sure

Job security. Instead of do a good job and move onto something else, it’s get it done and we’ll fix it later and make even more money through perpetual care. As for here…it’s NJ, there’s always potholes. Some places you’d think IED’s were planted. As far as filling them, that’s about all they do, use some cold patch and not even tamp it down, just let the cars drive over it and the stuff flies everywhere.

Funny how this thread suddenly became relevant. Monday was warm after a cold Sunday. I filled up the car on Sunday but I am careful to not fill it to the brim. Well, not so much this time. Monday I smelled gas and sure enough the fuel level was right to the overflow vent. So, I had to take the car out for a drive to use up a bit of gas right?! Almost home and a dump truck going the other way hits a pothole and about a shovel full of dirt jumped out causing a rock to chip my windshield Just got back from a visit to Safelite and they did their repair. This is the first repair I have ever done. The chip was big enough to qualify for a replacement but that I’m afraid is easier said than done. I’m happy with the fix. As long as it keeps it from cracking.

That’s not bad at all. Amazing the size of knots they can fix! I have a membership with a company that does it here for my work vehicles. Well worth it because I’m on the road all the time. 60 bucks a year and the repairs are free.

I've had windshield chips repaired that way three times, and I never had it come back or crack.
The best outfit in my area is Champion, not Safelite.

When we lived in WY, we would have chips repaired several times a year. This was due to the gravel the Hwy Department put down for ice control. My Gov Rig was in at least once a month. The local windshield folks did the jobs. Never had an issue with cracks developing. I suspect that most windshield folks could/should be able to do the job. Thankfully after snow and lots of rain (more than normal) the roads haven't developed major holes in them yet. But there is still time.

We do too, I don’t think most people realize it is a sign of a good economy. All the heavy trucks loaded with industrial equipment rolling out of Detroit pound the pavement in. Combination with freeze / thaw cycles takes a real toll on the roads

We have 4 seasons here in New England. Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter and Road Repair. My Great Uncle owned a paving company in Lexington, KY. Back in the 70s when I was a teenager I used to work for him during the summer. He had a great reputation and did great work. I can't say the same for some of the work I've seen around here in the past few years. It's not likely to get better either.

We have 4 seasons here in New England. Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter and Road Repair. Except for the road repair, that is suspiciously similar to the Mi island I grew up on. The roads didn't get too bad because all the lake effect monsoon rain washed all the salt and chloride off (into Lake Erie).
