OK here's the deal. We are having a cook out at work tomorrow. Steaks on the grill, and baked potatoes, and a bunch of fixing. I am cooking the steaks and taters. But... I never have cooked a baked potato on a grill. I'm not a big fan of baked. So... I have people coming for lunch scattered throughout the day. I get enough notice to get the steaks done by the time they show up for lunch, but how on earth do you time a tater? One suggestion I have heard was to bake them at home and bring them in packed in a cooler. Bake at 500 degrees for 30 minutes, Pack tightly in a cooler Let them stand and finish cooking for at least 40 more minutes Should be good for about 6 hours Any thoughts?

Fully cook them (1 hour at 350). Wrap in foil, tightly pack in cooler, and depending on grill space (and how many yer feeding), put a bunch in a grill using the indirect method (coals on one side, taters on the other) to keep 'em warm. If yer cookin for a crowd of 20 or more, I'd see about a grill dedicated to keepin' the taters warm...
I wouldn't count on partially cooking them, and finishing while the steaks cook. Steaks are done in 5 - 6 minutes, and the grill is opened and closed often. Taters can be hard in the middle if not fully cooked, and ya won't be able to count on them being done at the same time as the meat.

MICROWAVE Does it qualify as a "baked Potato" If you shoot it with microwaves? Poke holes in the skins with a fork (so they don't 'splode), wrap with a damp paper towel and you can nuke two of 'em on high for about 8 mins. for the pair. Voila... baked tater.

I always rub the "cleaned and dryed" tater with Crisco before I put them in the oven. What you get is a baked potato with a tasty, crispy skin... Yum!

We usually put them in the microwave for for about 6 minutes for 2 potatoes and then finish them on the BBQ with the steaks - pierce the potatoes before you nuke them - BBQ gives them a better tasting skin IMHO.
We BBQ year round on the back porch, natural gas fired grill - good to -40°.

Yup! In fact, I was using mine the other day to melt snow so I had water to flush my toilet! Do you know how much snow it takes to melt down and fill a 5-gallon bucket?? ALOT!!!!!!
