VRCC #437 "Form follows Function"

Colorado Front Range - elevation 2.005 km

WWW
« on: March 04, 2024, 11:55:54 AM »

They sent me this link: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/legal/terms-of-use/#section3
It was addressed to my user@domain address that only they know - they looked it up in their records.

Here's the content there - includes threats for reverse-engineering their software - which I mentioned I have no issues with such Garmin software, given their lies and customer abuse.  Though I haven't done that.   Not a coincidence I received this moments after posting the above.

Garmin can KMA.  They will never receive another order from me again - having been a loyal yet abused customer for at least 25 years.  Here's a big middle finger to Garmin.  I encourage everyone to use another GPS provider.  Garmin SUCKS.

In my opinion, a class-action lawsuit of Garmin for Breach of Contract on their promise of "Lifetime Maps" with purchased GPS units is entirely appropriate.  However the result of such suits may punish the bad company, they generally have trivial benefit for the injured parties and a HUGE windfall for the attorneys.

That would be my assumption as well, looks like a regular update thing... Pretty sad, Garmin used to have impeccable customer service; I switched to a weather resistant cell phone in a cradle about a decade ago though after spending big money on Garmins over the years, they just can't compete with the real time data a properly configured phone can provide...

Combined with their apparent decline is customer support and ethics, think I made the right choice...

I am not high enough on the food chain , but years ago my Garmin would not update.  I contacted them and more money was involved than I wanted to spend. The Garmin sits in the garage sale box. The new phone has all the info without the added  expense.
Garmin , KMA also if the line is not to long.  2funny crazy2

I just went upstairs and located my first GPS.

I turned it on and the screen still worked as did the buttons.  It knew where it was when it was last shutdown but was having some issues loading the data for today (has not been used in a few years).

Got it in late 2003 (year I got the Valkyrie).  First road trip was to Key West in spring of 2004.  Second road trip was Inzane 2004 in Paducah, KY

(picture taken on the return trip home from Paducah).

Picture taken on our last stop on our return from Key West in Spring 2004.  Red line shows the Magellan GPS.

I like those speed trap warnings on Waze. I'd also like to see warnings for red light cameras and other roadside revenue generation scams.

Lately, Waze has been warning me about some massive potholes in my area. In Colorado, roads have become a low priority, especially now that the government is getting into the hotel business.

Waze can alert you to red light/speed camera scams, you might need to enable notifications for them though... (Or report them if you see one that's not on the map)

...or ride in The Republic of Texas where we banned those scams...  Wink

Would be nice.  Since the Californicators ruined the People's Republic of Cali - then ran away from their mess, brought the same here and ruined Beautiful Colorado - now hopelessly blue with no prospect of recovery - our LGBTQ way left Governor and the statehouses declared us a Sanctuary for the poor lovely illegal terrorists and now all their funds are dedicated to their free healthcare, free housing (you want to stay in a hotel - good luck - even Hilton's etc), free phones, free food, free education, free drugs... Whatever they want (not need) while our veterans and legal immigrants and underserved citizens go homeless and starving.  Everything they need to buy their Democrat votes and stay in power in perpetuity.  So the left of course finds scams to steal more money from those who have it. No chance the ticket cameras will be banned anytime - soon or ever.  Guns were next - now you have to get NICS approval for all gun sales or transfers - including to your brother - and wait 3 days.  Mags limited to 15 rounds and forget 80% finished "ghost gun" kits.  Senate bill 279 makes it a misdemeanor then a felony to possess sell or transfer unserialized guns - no grandfather clause so what was legal when you built it now makes you a felon. It requires them to be serialized by an FFL, with a 4473 check. Ironic I am spammed by 80% receiver sellers.  Of course zillions of other spams too, over 300/day that aren't caught by the filters yet.

Haven't mentioned the HUGE crime wave that came with these freeloaders, even into my neighborhood.  I'm carrying even at home now.  Watch nextdoor for all the local muggings, breakins & car theft reports. Not to mention, stop at major road stoplights in town and be accosted by the deadbeats wielding stolen gas station bug scrubbers who spit on your windshield then want $10 to clean it off.

Haven't seen the gang store thefts here, like in San Fran yet.  Guess that's coming.

I  HATE the left who have ruined my state.  Colorado was solidly red, a good, safe place to live when we moved here in 87.

You can still get a CCW.  Guessing that's on the menu too.

Used to be, we'd see plenty of Texas plates; Texans who loved our state, clogged up the mountain roads with their RV's (never pulled over to let all the faster cars pass).  Never have that issue anymore - I think Texans aren't much interested in Kalifornia 2 anymore.  Used to be an annual tomato war between TX & CO teams - in the Twin Lakes area I think.  Haven't heard of that lately.  Checking, it's still happening though.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorado-Texas_Tomato_War

Wishing I hadn't set down such ingrained roots here.

Kolorado is Kalifornia v. 2.

Mark have to agree sadly Colorado was once conservative now gone kooky liberal.  I have a friend who tells this story he was waiting on his wife to finish her skiing in a Colorado resort and it was freezing cold and he had the motor running and the heater on..  There is a knock on his window he rolls down the window a few inches and answers yes may I help you.  And the guy says angrily dude turn off your motor your melting the snow pack! He says what, thinking its candid camera from the old days and surely this cant be real but no the guy is serious. My friend just says no cant do that its cold go away. And after a while the snow flake leaves unbelievable.

Well said Mark.  It's a sad situation to behold in the Centennial State.

I saw on Denver news the city is closing large metro DMV offices on a (weekly?) rotating basis so the funds can be redirected to support the migrants illegals.  They didn't even forewarn customers, and a long line was waiting outside a locked up DMV early that morning to get their registrations and plates.  A person stepped out, said something and pointed at a sign on the door.  They're telling everyone to go online for services, but to be patient because of online traffic.

Funny thing, they said no DMV employees are losing their jobs or experiencing reductions in their salaries as of yet.  So why aren't they open to serve American citizens?  A pain for politics media SCAM?  Just give us the money, well fix this predicament.  Yeah, right.

I agree completely about the decline of Colorado. This was once an ideal place to live, but now I'm seriously looking at moving out. In addition to the problems already mentioned, our roads are literally crumbling. I've found state highway segments in NE Colo where the pavement is so rough that I ride on the shoulder to avoid tire or suspension damage. I traveled through 9 western states over the last year and other than I-40 in NM, Colorado roads are by far the worst. Even California had significantly better pavement. Heck, Venezuela and Haiti may have a better infrastructure!

The current governor is a radical environmentalist and has packed state agencies with green zealots. When he took office he pledged not to widen any highways unless the new lanes were tolled. Ancient 4 lane stretches of I-25 north and south of Denver were widened to 6 lanes, but the new lanes have camera/transponder tolling. I-70 west of Denver is stop and go much of the time, so CDOT converted the left shoulders into 'express' lanes, and added tolls as well. The lanes are so skinny that I'd hate to drive a big RV there.

The 'express' tolls are variable, and sometimes exceed a buck a mile. So drivers started moving in and out of the lanes to avoid the charges. The dems were having none of that, so they replaced a law that limited automated ticketing to residential streets and school zones. Now, if your tire accidentally crosses the line separating the 'express' lane from the peasant lane, you'll get a $250 ticket in the mail!

And I thought the closing of White Fence Farm was bad.  Last time out to Co was 2017 and starting in 1993 have made 10+ trips. It is very sad to hear this!

I carry the U.S. atlas in my sidebag.
I get made fun of, but sooner or later someone asks to look at it!

I also use paper maps, but more often look at on-line maps and write out turn-by-turn directions.

Like this:  -LEFT on 29 (X miles)
                -RIGHT on 332 (Y miles)
                -RIGHT on 13 (Z miles)

And I may zero my #2 tripmeter (Interstate) at each turn, so I know when to start looking for my next road.

My big old worn world atlas has countries in it that no longer exist and generally lacks the detail on back and secondary roads I like to ride on.  And it's like 20" X 16" so I'm not taping it on my shield.

I got a first generation (little) Garmin with one of my bikes long ago, and it's still in the box.  I don't know why I keep it.  Anyone wants it, it's free except shipping, if I can find it.  It might serve to keep a kickstand from sinking in the mud, for a while anyway.   Grin

I like paper maps. When my grandson was little we would go over maps with a fine tooth comb. He was (is) a natural map reader. Brenda on the other hand, couldn’t get across town using a map.

My granddaughter on the other hand loves to be in charge of the phone map. But she turns off the sound and tells you to turn half a second before the street.  Smiley

Mark , FYI. Get a good quality squirt gun.  Fill it with your favorite ammo. You know , H O T sauce.
Payback is justified.  It was a hazmat assault.  You had a neutralizer for your own protection.
I actually used this method many years ago. You may have to use a coffee filter to strain the sauce.  Ink also works .  2funny 2funny crazy2 crazy2

Ross, a good squirt gun with hot sauce is a marvelous non lethal idea.  (unless you hit the driver)

Similar to commercial pepper sprays, but better range and accuracy.

I got a great big jug of real hot Cayenne Pepper powder at the Costco, and have been racking my brain on how to deliver it to squirrels digging up my yard.

On line tells you to mix it with birdseed 'cause the birds don't care, but birdseed it the best way to attract the damn rodents there is, so I put down NO birdseed.

I'm not going to just sprinkle it around the property as the rain will just wash it away.  Same deal with using Vaseline as a sticking suspension agent.

I'd like to use a pyrotechnic, but quarter sticks of dynamite, M80s and Silver Salutes are all illegal and hard to come by, and how do you rig a pressure detonator anyway?  Same problem with trying to use a canned air spray.

Paintball guns shoot pepper balls, but subsonic super quiet .22s are much more accurate.

The local population knows trespass on my property is bad for their health, and all I have to do is open a window to see them running away (fastly).

Necessity may be the mother of all invention, but this mother is stumped.   Grin

(sorry for the drift)

Jess , a garden sprayer , we call it a Hudson sprayer , usually has an adjustable tip. A fine stream shoots pretty far.
Quite a while ago ( it might have been here) I saw a trebuchet (catapult) used to launch squirrels into a pond.
I do not believe in animal cruelty , but some are invasive. My home has suffered a lot of damage and the situation was addressed.  crazy2 tickedoff

I've seen the squirrel catapult video (which is funny as hell, and certainly non lethal).

My squirrels would be right back, simply avoiding the catapult.

A dose of pepper is not cruelty, and not lethal either.  I continue to ponder a delivery system for powdered pepper, especially one that won't dose me by accident (as much as the squirrels would enjoy that).

Where we used to live , chipmunks were a real problem.  I checked with neighbors. 5mm pellet rifle was no issue. The police said to be careful.
Coyotes moved in and ate the Ferrel cats that were controlling the chipmunks.  One year I had a contest with a neighbor. I shot 87 and he trapped 93.  I left the corpses on a wall and the next morning they were gone.  It was fun and the monks were destructive.
