When I went thru sport skydiving school they said they gauranteed your chute to open.    If it didnt open they said they would keep dropping you till it did open.

Also in the skydiving class a student asked " If your main chute doesnt open...and then your reserve chute doesnt open....how long would it be before you hit the ground?"

The instructors answer was "The rest of your life."

I like thrills and aircraft and high places, but I'm never jumping out of a good airplane with a parachute.

Why do people have to ridicule something they don’t understand. Skydiving is a safe sport. It’s so safe, statistically speaking your chances of survival increase when you leave the airplane. There’s a higher percentage chance of your brakes failing on the freeway than having a double parachute malfunction.

The eight hours + of  free fall time I have banked are close to the best eight hours of my life.

When I worked in the parachute loft in VS23 a butter bar-Ensign-asked me what happens if I pull the D ring and the chute no open? I told him bring back the D ring and I'll be happy to issue you a new parachute!  I always wanted to learn how to skydive. coulda woulda shoulda and now TIME have caught up with me. RIDE SAFE.

Jeff, I was not ridiculing skydiving (at all), I was only making fun of Brian's picture.

I understand skydiving pretty well, I just never had the opportunity to do it in my youth, and don't care to start in my older age.

And I thank you for your service as a USAF PJ.   cooldude

Wouldn't the alternative be jumping out of a good airplane withOUT a parachute?

I'd have to go with option #1.  Cheesy

Tried it once as a double like Serk in the picture. After all was said and done, I really didn't care for it so just chalked it up as a bucket list item checked off. Was it a thrill? Yeah...but with reservations. I've read about folk that have reached an age level of 80, 90, or 100 that do it with a pro, I guess it's to prove they still have it...whatever "it" is! I'll be 86 in a few days, I don't feel I have to prove anything now so I'll pass.  Grin

I skydived 66 times. Then my wife decided I didn't  like it any more.

Actually it is a bit longer story than that, but I prefer tell it that way :-)

Heh... the spousal unit skydived... I think around 240 times? And decided she doesn't wanna do it anymore....

...I keep trying to get her back up in the air...

Love her, the fact I have 1/2 million life insurance on her has NOTHING to do with it, I assure you! It's mainly... she's a lot nicer to be around after she's been in the air...

My first wife made an arbitrary rule. She tried to say on jump days I could only do two. So I tried it. I wasn’t very happy about it and she was no happier that I got home early. So, I started breaking that rule. After 3 or 4 I went home very happy. She was still unhappy. My thought was it takes two to fight so one of us should be happy. Yes. Free fall creates happiness that there is undeniable.

In an effort to be part of the conversation, my wife would be happy if I sold my bikes and never rode on two wheels again as would most of my family. It’s not really on the surface much but it’s there and always it always bums me out.

When I was in Forestry school back in the middle 60's, one of my classmates was a smoke jumper.  He was telling about one of his jump mates who claimed to not get any thrill out of stepping out of a plane.  He said that he was perfectly relaxed.  The Jump Master heard him say this.  So, on the next fire/jump, as this individual stepped up to the door the Jump Master doubled up his fist and hit the guy between the shoulder blades.  Two days later this guy was complaining of pain between his shoulder blades and couldn't figure out what he had done.

The fellow student did make it through school and last I heard he wasn't jumping any more.   Me, I figure that leaving a perfectly good plane was not going to happen.   2funny

Back in the early 1970's I made 7 military style round parachute static line jumps. (not in the military).  Then in the late 1990's I got into sport parachute jumping with the rectangular wing style chutes and made 161 jumps.    Jump #161 went horribly wrong and I sold my gear and bought a fishing style kayak.  Got really into kayak fishing....caught some really nice fish over time. Still have my kayaks but dont fish with them much anymore.

Jump zone experts said I had a tension knot that broke 3 lines and snapped me so hard it gave me a herniated disk.   I had enough awareness to pull my cutaway handle and as I was reaching for reserve chute handle the cut away main automatically brought my reserve chute out.   Back hurt bad for couple weeks.  Had an mri done and the doc said the herniated disk was in the middle of my back but to give it time and should get better.   It did get better.   However if I try to lift something really heavy it reminds me its still there for a few days.

You are right about skydiving injury and death statistics.   Compared to other sports skydiving injury and death stats compared with other sports show skydiving safer than most sports when done correctly with good training and equipment  Look it up on the internet.  It was the most fun thing I have ever done.  It is a very addicting sport.  It is the only sport I ever got into that I started selling stuff to get money to jump more...ha.

Also when people would ask how much my chute and related equipment cost I woud tell them around $6,000 and they generally freakout at the cost.    My reply is "How much did your boat cost?....your motorcycle.....etc.etc."   Its actually a rather cheap sport to get into when compared with other sports.

May the 5th 2024....in a few weeks....my 42 year old son and his 18 yr old son (my gson) are going to do their first skydive.   They are going to do a tandem jump.   My gsons girlfriend is goin also to do her 2 nd tandem jump.

Actually my wife and I have always wanted to try it. There's a jump school at the Orange airport which is about 15 miles west of us. Who knows, maybe we'll do it some day. Also, it's been a few years since I've been there but they have really good airplanes, they fly the De Havilland DH-6, which is an awesome airplane. I believe they have a Cessna Caravan too. cooldude

Dont know about all jump zones but at Skydive Houston you can pay to take a ride up with the jumpers to watch.  Very interesting ride.  Not very expensive
