Hair Of The Dog...

The most generous and tactful among us might say, "That appears at first glance to be a bit counter-intuitive..." Others with a more pointed, direct style might say, "That's just plain stupid, dude!" Either way, it had even this not-savvy-non-medical person wondering if it was the smart thing to be doing so soon after my recent visit from 'Lucy'. Especially since it was strongly suspected grease-laden bacon might well have been the culprit behind 'the behind torrent'!

One fine recent day, Big Wolf and his bug-slaying pal rode over to Crossville and met Mitch at a Waffle House for brunch to be followed by a ride through the countryside. Wonderful day for a ride, near perfect weather, marvelous companions each a decent rider, and a place for a meal to start things off. A couple of things that are readily apparent when one stops at such places often... The coffee is always fresh and good, and... bacon is available 24/7/365. Alas... I once again found myself powerless to not go for an order of... Yep, I really did.

It was one of those calls we make that 'Monday morning quarterbacks' will later point out the obvious call we should have made, but... Before the fact, nobody has a clue if things would work out or not. Critiques (and critiquers) be cursed, it was also one of those decisions this dude was not inclined to worry about. However it might ultimately turn out, at the time of ingestion the subject item would be enjoyed to the fullest! If the worst should come to pass (emphasis on 'pass'), we'd just deal with it...

For the remainder of the ride and day, mild anxiety dominated my emotions, as I hoped I wouldn't come to regret my momentary weakness as the nice lady had taken our orders... NO! All good, all day and thereafter! I imagine it helped that I had soaked up excess grease with paper napkins before allowing it to pass my lips. I'm certain it also helped that I'd displayed remarkable self-restraint in limiting myself to only one order of that fried delight. It was, I believe, a momentous milestone, however, as it indicated the future still held the promise of more to come!

Two more days of riding would follow that excursion... and each with its own dietary challenges... All of which would work out just fine with no 'penalties' incurred and no casualties resulting from any of the social encounters... It was just a splendid three days of strengthening the bonds with our Valks and with each other... and of giving our 'little boys' an enjoyable workout.

Bruce , Dr. Prez here. As our body ages and changes (Valk riders never grow up) food that we loved and grew up on suddenly does not like us any more.  I have had a few favorites fight back. Sometimes I tried two or three  times just to be sure.  Sometimes , it's the different meds (aka drugs) we get to enjoy as we try to keep the physical body serviceable.
We (us) keep experimenting on how to make the body keep up. The body ages and the brain keeps lying to us. 2funny

Ross,

Yeah, I hate to admit it, but this positive thinking stuff does have its limitations! Keeping 'old machinery' running smoothly is no small challenge. Tweaking meds, adjusting diets, altering lifestyles all help, but even those suffer from the illusion you mentioned, plus the fact you pointed out about our bodies aging and our brains lying to us!

We can't change the facts of life, but we can maximize our efforts to keep things in perspective and our minds focused on the right things... I'm banking on this moderation angle to help keep me in the game! Besides working on projects and staying active, what all are you doing to maintain your youthful self?

DDT (12)

Rob,

Wussie or no... and half of any 'group' would disagree where this rider might fall on the scale of that sore subject... Some things just are worth the effort to find accommodations. I took a probiotic as suggested by Bret SD, and now I'm eating as I write this a double order of bacon I got next door at a Waffle House... I sure hope I don't have any stains to report this evening!

Ross,

Yep, Lucy came with much fanfare but departed without so much as a whimper. One minute she was there, four days later... I suppose you could call a couple of Imodium tablets a kitchen pass of sorts, but whatever it is, I'm grateful to accept it! Wonderful day yesterday as we logged some miles and made our way southward... Cold is coming, according to the ones who claim to know, so we're making an adjustment... no three-day waiting/cooling-off period necessary to make that call! I hope your projects and obligations are wrapping up so you can come out and play with the rest of us kids soon!!!

P.S. I'm keeping 'Eugene' handy just in case!  cooldude

Dennis,

Man oh man, your friends are indeed all anxiously awaiting your return, as well!!! A victory lap sure sounds like the perfect reaction following a year more or less of confinement... Count me in for that lap!!! I wouldn't be surprised at all if another 'volunteer' or two might want in on this, too...

Dennis,
Man oh Man indeed!  I know the anticipation of getting back out there after an extended battle with health issues!  Last weekend, with Bruce watching my progress, I scraped some skill rust off as I rolled up a few "victory" miles myself.  Do what you need to do to heal well.  I would certainly be interested in helping you celebrate with your victory run!

I love bacon, but please hold the hair of the dog from it.   Grin

I only eat it with a big eggs, hash browns, toast and jelly breakfast about once every 4-6 weeks though.  My regular breakfast is all about health, and nothing about wonderful.  And big meals put this old fellow to sleep anymore, and I have things to do.

An old line:

Waiter, there's a hair in my soup.

That's OK, there's no extra charge for it.

Jerry,

Providence sure smiled favorably upon you those three days, my friend, with near perfect weather! Heck, I reckon you could say I sort of lucked out myself, too! We did have three different rides on some outstanding bike roads, and the therapy we both received was much needed and mighty fine. On top of that, we had some remarkable grub on each of those, as well! Bacon the first day, roast beef and pineapple cobbler the second, and killer ribs followed by truly great cheesecake the third... I'm ready for a prescription refill, how about you?

Jess,

Sort of bland without any animal hair, but... whatever titillates your taste buds, I reckon. Yeah, I talk a big game, but truth be told, I have to mind what AND how much I eat most of the time, myself! A big meal, particularly one loaded with carbs, will have me fall asleep in no time... So that is ruled out when I'm riding. I'm too frugal to be replacing my 'wardrobe' except for normal wear, so any extravagance on this score must be followed by some compensatory very light meals... Oh well, at least 'Honest Joe' hasn't levied any new tax on this that I know of... not yet anyway...

Ross,

I applaud your energy and willingness 'to stay in the harness'...  cooldude Alas, I feel not a single twinge of envy, however!!!  Smiley We all need interesting things to look forward to and to motivate us to get up and go in the mornings... I do understand... I also count my blessings that 'work' happens to not be such a burden for this gypsy!  coolsmiley Good luck with all your tax adventures... I think I'll skip any further comments on that...

Most excellent pineapple cobbler with a scoop of ice cream for good measure too!

Dennis,

Yep, Laura, Mitch's dearly beloved, took plum creative recently and concocted that novel twist to an old favorite dessert. Nobody, including her, had ever heard of pineapple cobbler before, but... Why not, she thought, as all the ingredients were present, and her imagination was properly stimulated. She is a rather adventurous spirit anyway, ya know.

Jerry is absolutely correct, as usual, in that scoop of ice cream really enhanced it. I took it even further by adding some whipped cream on top of all that! Didn't take long, however, and I was snoozing in a nap chair down at the 'garage'... I strongly suspect I may have dreamed about it, too... Sort of an 'instant replay', if you know what I mean...
