Harry Truman was a different kind of President.  He probably made as many, or more important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other 42 Presidents preceding him. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House.

The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Independence Missouri . His wife had inherited the house from her mother and father and other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives there.

When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance' and,  later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year..

After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There was no Secret Service following them.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise.."

As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.

Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices. Political offices are now for sale.  (sic. Illinois )

Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, "My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!

I say dig him up and clone him!!

I actually grew up in Independence, Missouri, just a few blocks from the Truman home.  As a child, I used to rake the leaves in their yard.  It was also not uncommon to see President Truman going on walks around the neighborhood, although there were always secret service with him.  My mother was a private nurse to Bess Truman (his wife) during her later years in life.  They were very friendly people, in spite of the position he held.  Until they were no longer able to, they did their own grocery shopping at the neighborhood grocery store, also accompanied by secret service.  Until her dying day, Mrs. Truman had my mother, along with the other nurses, do the shopping at the same grocery store.  I have very fond memories of the entire Truman family.

Harry Truman was a good man and a good President of these United States.  His vice president Alben Barkley (awesome KY state park named after him) also was a good and reasonable man.

I often wonder what these men would think of their beloved Democrat party if they were alive today.

I often wonder what these men would think of their beloved Democrat party if they were alive today. Just had this same conversation with my brother in law, it seems the Republicans are now the Democratic party of the 60's and for the old school conservative Democrat has been lost somewhere? But not to defend the the Republican party either, After bush caved in on the first Stimulus at the end of his term!! and now look at what can be blamed on him like a snowball. But now we have the Scourge of the World Liberals!! i have a friend here i see at our local, Cafe older gentleman he is running for office, Also Jack Reed has been here also in the last six months Jamestown is like Marthas Vinyard, hey even Jim Carey filmed the Movie (Me myself and Irene) here LOL.. Lets call my friend "Cappy" he is one of the Original owners of (Waist Management) if you catch my drift, well he is a Republican, So he comes up to my bother inlaw and me and tells me he gonna have to register as a Democrat ? so he shakes our hand sits down with us and explains, He knows after living here his whole life he would not stand a chance as a Republican and having been self employed, he is Sick of raising Corporate taxes also he ask for my vote and knowing he has been a conservative i might have no choice but to to help him As he is now a conservative Democrat, i know this seems shallow but in a state dominated by Liberals it's this or dont vote at all so my point? There is good democrats out there that are for lower Taxation. Now it gets better, At 70+ years old Cappy just got arrested, it seems his opponent he is running against has written some kind of email against him, and is family of the Chief of police here, Cappy tried to stop this email by going down to the station and some how got arrested, Got to love these old guys LOL, well come to find out that he after talking w/ Cappy he said they are nervous he had helped his opponent get elected last term on their campaign, you see he has many many Union friends that will pull him now that he is a Democrat. That is very cool.......... it just goes to show that you really never know what someone else's life experience has been.

Harry Truman has always been one of my favorite presidents.

I really appreciate his no nonsense "tell it like it is" attitude.

We really need more of our leaders to be like that.

Harry S. Truman was also known to make quite a few unpopular decisions during his Administration. Of course any President is never going to make everyone happy.
FDR made many enemies and past ledgeslation that still anger conseratives today. But the real job of any President is to lead the country not only during his administration, but far beyond the current problems of state.
Barak Obama isn't HST or FDR, but future generations may speak fondly of the compassion he has for the average working stiff. Despite of the ranting of those conservative comedians like Limbaugh, Levin, and Hannity.

And all this time I've read it was an ounce of bourbon.
