I was reading this article about a Chinese car company working on making a knock-off Goldwing, but with a 2.0 liter 8 cylinder engine: https://www.visordown.com/news/new-bikes/chinese-honda-gold-wing-rival-use-eight-cylinder-engineWhen I noted this line: "The 2,000cc (or thereabouts) flat-eight is also expected to be used in a cruiser-style bike, although only the tourer has been seen so far in an official capacity, or sort of official, at least" And from this article: https://www.cycleworld.com/motorcycle-news/great-wall-motor-eight-cylinder-motorcycles-coming-soon/This line: "Rumors and spy pictures of a pair of flat-eight machines started to circulate in China last year, one resembling a Gold Wing, the other a cruiser reminiscent of the old Honda Rune" Now, being a Chinese knock off I doubt I'll be rushing out to be first in line to pick one up, but still find it very interesting, and who knows, if it gets some traction it might push Mother Honda into making a real updated Valkyrie.... Well, one can dream I 'spose...

And you thought the 1500 CC Valkyrie and Gold Wing were so heavy....
I kind of doubt I'll be rushing off to get one. MAYBE if they made it as a trike or with a sidecar....

Valkyrie not too heavy. Maybe I’m not old enough. But I could handle two more cylinders I think

Wonder why Honda didnt put a 6 speed transmission. Im sure the engine would have powered it.... As I recall, 5th on the Valk was considered to be the overdrive... the motor's designed to run at relatively high RPMs (though I see no need to run around at 4-5K all the time), and could be driven lawfully up to 70-80 all day in 4th (but I wouldn't). A 6th gear might make it a 140-50 mph monster. I'll wait and see how this 8 performs and lasts and reliability. But even if it's great, I won't be buying Chinese. My 2 Valks (109K and 62K) are barely broken in. And kick ass and take names with the little 1520 6 better than fine. I wish mine were still this clean.

I think the 6th gear question was answer many years ago with the Mario?? re-gearing for the transmission. As I recall, the motor didn't have the torque to pull the higher gear ratio. I don't know what the 5th gear final ratio was for the Mario re-gearing and maybe some thing between the 'Wing '97+ 5th gear and the Mario ratio would work. Unless all that is accomplished is spreading the ratios by 6 gears with 6th about the same as 5th gear. I see no point in that.
I never tried it on my Valk but I tracked the red line speed on my ST1100. 1st gear red line was 53 mph, 2nd gear red line was 85 mph and 3rd gear was 105 mph. 4th and 5th are overdrive with 3rd being right at 1:1. Top speed (depending on a couple variables) is said to be about 125mph. Specs are about 740 lbs with ~100 HP and ~74 Ft lbs torque.

[/quote] Japanese 100x's better than Chinese. wouldn't think there would be that much difference in reliability but probably still is a wide gap? as far as Valks being heavy, I only find them to be an issue if stopping on uneven pavement with the wife on back and/or my I/S top trunk is filled up with 20lbs. or so also gets a tad bit tipsy, considering my hips are shot is affecting my ability of my legs to work as they should and bend. Never thought I would have an issue but for some of us that time comes sooner rather than later.

Sadly, if the zealots running the EPA are in power much longer, such a bike will be illegal to sell. Their new CO2 limit of 85 grams/mile is so stringent that not a single gas or diesel (even hybrid) vehicle comes close to meeting it. Auto makers are already responding. V8s are nearly gone in cars and are quickly disappearing in trucks. Inline 4s (usually turbos) are replacing V6 engines in all but the largest vehicles. Some motorcycle companies are already dropping larger cruisers. There has been little in-depth coverage of this in the press. Here's a page with some detail: https://www.afpm.org/newsroom/blog/what-know-about-epas-passenger-vehicle-standardsThese guys clearly have an agenda, and have a Don't Ban Our Cars website: https://www.dontbanourcars.com/

Was just coming here to post an update... https://www.cycleworld.com/motorcycle-news/gwm-souo-flat-eight-tourer-revealed/Looks nice from the side, IMHO... From the front.... not so much... Not as bad as that Bozo the Clown Victory Vision, but not great... The kicker for me at least, even worse than Made in China, is as of now appears to be available in automatic only...

I don't want a Chinese bike. But I'd like a test ride. An eight-speed DCT, in full auto or semiauto (thumb buttons). A DOHC 2000cc flat 8 should have some juice. Electric adjustable shield height. This company also makes cars, one of which is called the the Tank. I had to look that one up. It's not a tank, it's an SUV.

Brian, I agree the option of manual or auto is desirable, don't knock the DCT in the Goldwing unless you've tried it.
And by try it, I mean some serious seat time.
To each his own, but the DCT Goldwing is awesome. Crack the throttle and hang on. Shifts so fast and smooth, if you didn't hear the engine roar, you wouldn't know it shifted.
Are there any real specs on the Chinese bike?
I wonder what it weighs?
I can't imagine it's geared to the Chinese market.

I accept that a computer can shift better, more efficiently, quicker than I can. From a purely technical point of view an automatic (Car, motorcycle, whatever) is the better option.
But I don't ride to experience the machine doing all the work for me. I ride to enjoy the symphony of the melding of man and machine working together in perfect harmony.
For some that means letting the machine do the shifting. And that's okay.
For me, I enjoy the experience of working the clutch, throttle, shifter together to make it all happen.
From a purely mechanical point of view we are quickly approaching the point where the computer could operate the entire vehicle better than a human could. But that's not what I want to experience when I throw a leg over a bike.
Not poo-poo'ing those who do want a more automated experience, if that's what one desires there's nothing wrong with that at all. Just not what I ride for. Due to lack of availability of manuals I've had to accept my cage is, and likely will remain, an automatic, but keeping my motorcycle a manual is a hill I'll die on...

Yup. My perspective as well. It's like I want to be one with my bike so that it is like it becomes an extension of me. Don't want my bike to be one with me with me just being an extension of it. Where's the fun in that?

I totally understand your point of view, it's the same I had before I bought the DCT.
When ever I have the yearning to give my left foot and hand a work out, I can jump on one of my Valks and I do.
When ever I want to feel one with my bike, I put the DCT into manual sport mode and search out some twisties. Holey Moley, that will get your blood flowing.
The sifting part of the computer takes a nap.

New video with more details and better looks... Intriguing, but $28,000 for a scooter and automatic only are both deal breakers for me, but still interesting... If they wanna make it as a touring company, gonna need to build up a network of dealers across the nation to service these things while they're out touring really quick, IMHO... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cxm_spF9-pk

It’s not an ugly machine, it does have some appeal to it but I would need to see fit and finish up close on something that’s not made for the unveiling and reliability concerns come to mind as well.
