Three Days, 660 miles.

We are just getting back out on the road (had some family issues last year).

We took three days this week to travel down to Pawleys Island (a place we have traveled to before) and then over to Statesboro, GA and then home. Part of the reason for the trip was to see how well my new GPS worked.  It's a Garmin Zumo 595.  The GPS I have been using for trips was a Zumo 665 but Garmin stopped map updates for this device last year citing device memory issues (which is easily fixed).  Of course it is about 10 years old.

So, instead of using the mapping program I have been using for 12 years I have to use "Basecamp" ( Garmin product).  It's a big learning curve.

There were some issues with the trip (had a "point" on the east bound lane of the limited access four lane when I was going on the west side).  That meant the program what route me over there and then back (have to have the map blown really well on the screen to see the different lanes).

But other than that, the trip was fun.  Temperatures in the mid to high 70's,  just a little over 200 miles each day and the accommodations were ok.

Here is the route we took.  It's a satellite map based on a Spot Tracker I use for safety on the road (our family can follow our route live).

As one of the last pictures, I will include a picture (screen shot) from the new software of what the trip was suppose to look like.

The Route, based on my Spot Tracker.

Getting Ready to load the bike and trailer first day out.

Video of leaving.   It's not fully processed yet on Youtube.

Probably a dumb question but what are all the numbers for along the route?

You know I really didn't know but I sort of assumed.  So I looked at the map.  If you blow up the map you will see that there are more points on the map than before.  For instance, if you look at the point with the number 8 around Monks Corner, SC and you zoom in (on the map in the program not on the screen shot) you will se there are actually eight (6) data collection points there because we were not really moving.

You know, stop for gas, get back on the bike.  Move to a parking spot.  Get off the bike.  Get back on and head out.  Now how six points turn into a count of eight.....

And if you are stopped for the evening. I think it knows you are stopped and does not send any updates.  But if you move, it will send an update. Almost like a warning that the Spot Tracker was moved.

I think I still have a USA atlas with the spiral edge in all plastic somewhere in the house…probably from 1993 or so.

Some videos from Day Two: Trip from Pawleys Island to Statesboro, GA.  Mostly all rural roads.

Note: it is taking YouTube longer to process the videos to the highest definition (1080p) for these videos.

And you might have to manually select 1080p as the definition since I think default is 720p.

Some rural SC roads headed to GA

For some reason, since I did live for a few years in Richmond Hill, GA, this looks that the GA I knew.

And. yes there are some bugs on the camera

Bout every other year or so I shelled out for a new Truckers Road atlas. Once in awhile NOT always there would be a new to me low bridg listed in that section of the T R A. They'd run anywhere from $35.00 to a bit North of $60.00 BUT Still Cheaper than toppin out a trailer!  Cry One company I drove for fired a 25 year man cuz he topped out a trailer! Like I'd stated thast T R A might could save yer job! RIDE SAFE.
