Just a heads up, if anyone wants to ride to the summit of Mt. Evans in Colorado (Highest paved road in North America) it will NOT open at ALL for the 2025 season so they can repave the thing, so be sure you get your ride in THIS year or plan it for 2026 or later:

It was an epic ride indeed but definitely needed repaving on the top few miles.

Well, they renamed it from Mt. Evan to Mt. Blue Sky. (Change is on Google Maps). Apparently there is another Mt. Evan farther south that is supposed to be the actual Mt. Evan from the git-go.

I got to make the summit a few years back.

I waited a few years before I made the trip up on the bike. The road had been closed for years prior.
Finally opened and got to make it to the top. I had been under the assumption that the entire road was redone.

That was not the case. There were long stretches that were just like being in a rodeo with frost heaved roads.

But there was a stretch, about 200 yards long of perfect, wide, well marked pavement. Then it turned to crap again for a while.

And the mountain goat herds. We had some issues. They are not road goats. They begged to differ.

There is a long story on that trip, with a daughter blowing up her car north of Omaha on the way to the airport to fly out to Denver, I was in Idaho Springs mid-week at the time, torrential rains, a really late start to get the ride in for the summit, tornadic winds in Denver out by the airport, (my wife was flying in for the weekend), and the hail storm from hell when we were in downtown Denver. Had some other weird stuff happen too.

Ultimately we survived.

Anyway, got a picture of me at the summit when it was still Mt. Evans

Indeed... Here is Serk Jr at the summit (Or VERY close to it)

And the elder spawn at the summit a few years prior:

And much like Fort Hood, they can rename it, but until the current generation dies out, it will maintain the REAL name, no matter what they rename it to or why...

The sign says it is and besides the bike was too heavy to carry up to the actual summit.

While I was working for GM we did a lot of vehicle testing in that area.  One of my responsibilities was ride trip captain, I routed, organized, and led rides consisting of 10 to 20 vehicles.  We often had co-op students along on the rides, and when the Mt. Evans summit was open, I would often get out of my vehicle and walk along side the students on the way to the restrooms.  I'd always say "I'll race you to the restroom", and several would take off, run about 50 feet and fall over since the oxygen level/Barometric pressure was so low and they weren't acclimated to it yet.  Some lessons learned last longer than others.

Actually that day we saw 2 "test vehicles" that day at Summit Lake.
