On Colorado 83 near Parker yesterday I rode by a blazing white Tesla in the opposite lane. By the time I circled back to a side road for this picture there wasn't much left but the batteries, seat frames, and wheels. It burned for hours, starting a grass fire and closing the road in both directions.

Watch the local sale sheets for a set of slightly tarnished Tesla rims.

I don't usually drive Teslas, but when I do I prefer them medium rare at the most.

That's not going to buff out.
I know nothing about EVs, but it seems it would be pretty difficult to discover what went wrong exactly from that charred heap.

The cause would be interesting to know. From what I read there was no other vehicle involved, and I saw no evidence of a collision when I rode by shortly after the fire began. On a trip through Wyoming I heard some locals discussing a Tesla that ended up in a nearby junkyard. It slipped off the jack during a tire change, and the jack pierced the battery pack. Luckily it didn't start a fire, but the insurance company totalled it due to the cost of battery replacement.

Every Battery Penetration Abuse Test I ever performed started a fire Lots of other things do too, including rapid discharge. Overcharge, internal short, external short, many others EV causes Easy to short the battery of VW by sitting down on seat cushion

I've had two 18v. Drill batteries burst into flames at the shop. They burn hot and fast. I no longer leave my batteries on the chargers in my garage. The percentages are probably low, but it would scare me to have an EV charging in my garage

Interesting about the drill batteries. I purchased a new drill (forget the brand name) a year or so ago.
All my other (much older) drills using NiCad batteries. This new one had Lithium batteries. After owning it for a few months, one of the batteries that was not in use (after being charged I removed it from the charger) was attached to the drill (battery on the drill was discharged).
The battery was no longer charged and, in fact, was close to zero volts. I was ticked. Never happened with the NiCads. So, I put it back on the charger and it would not charge. Turns out the battery voltage was so close to zero, that the charger did not recognize the battery when it was attached to charge.
Did a search on line and found that this is not uncommon for lithium batteries. The fix was to attach a 9 volt battery to the Lithium battery for a few seconds to get the battery voltage up and then pop it into the charger. That worked.
But the point is compared to NiCad batteries he Lithium batteries are crap. In my humble opinion.
