Also just to be clear to folks that may not know...this tool is only needed if you are changing out the actual springs (and only then on one side). It is not required if you are just doing a seal/bushing change.

I'm in the middle of resealing my forks, finished with the right side and about to tackle the left.
In researching the assembly / re-assembly I ran across this old post of yours that you don't have to remove the spring on the left side just to reseal and replace the bushings, therefore you don't need the special "left fork tool"!

Could I get you to expand on this?
All I'm doing is resealing and replacing the bushings.
I'm following a Clymer manual, do I just skip over the parts that deal with the spring part?

A little side-note: As I'm following the Clymer on the right side fork it didn't mention to put the "backing ring" on that fits above the seal!!
I discovered the ring on the bench after I was admiring my "completed work" on the fork!!!
DAMMIT!!!!
Apart we go AGAIN!! tickedoff tickedoff
Worked out well the second time!!

Thanks for any info you can give.

I don't have the Clymer so I don't know what to tell you to ignore LOL! BUT, the left fork only dampens on compression...and the spring pack is screwed to the fork lid like the right fork is, but is NOT attached inside the tube...so unless you need to get the spring out of the pack it's in to replace the spring itself, you don't need the tool to loosen the nut that holds it there. Just pull the whole pack out. Rest of the fork comes apart/together like the other side.

Be sure you get the seals in the correct direction or they won't last long! Also, I use a plastic bag, like a grocery bag, to cover the tube/bushings and slide the seal over the bushings on the outside of the bag to avoid damaging them getting them across the bushings.

Thanks for the info!!

Got it done!!

Yea, I just replaced the seals and bushings!

Another side note:
Since I had the issue on the right with the manual forgetting to mention the "backer ring" I paid close attention on the left and, Lo and Behold, it left out the ring on the left too!!!

Did you add a note in the margin so you'll remember next time?   Grin

Good suggestion!!  But I didn't!

I will cause my memory isn't what it used to be!!
(Well, to be truthful I guess it is because I never had that good of a memory...)
