OK, this may be a stupid question but....I took off the stock triple trees and want to polish them. How do I get the steering stem separated from the lower triple tree?

I don't think the stem is meant to come out of the lower. Pressed in or welded or somthing to that effect. Probably will need to work around the stem

Make sure that you have a spare. It was never intended to be removed. Having said that it was put into the lower tree. If the lower tree was cast around the stem then you will destroy it if you try to remove it. In any case it might be a one way stem and lower tree and you will need that spare.

Heads up........
I was told recently that if you are polishing aluminum you should use respiratory protection as they have linked it with Alzheimer's - I think that was what it was but can't remember for sure.

Steelers, Didnt you buy a set of the 6 degree trees from Daryl and don't you have to press out the steering stem from your old ones to use it in the new ones?

Yes I did just install the 6 degree trees from Daryl. I was thinking about polishing the stock set and see if my buddy was interested in putting them on his Valk. If not, I figure I would just put them on ebay. BTW, Daryl supplies a new steering stem that screws in from the bottom tree. You dont need the old one.

I have heard that Aluminum was not good for you.... to ingest. I have saved my Mother's old Aluminum Cast Cookware..... so I can look at it whenever my Alzheimer's kicks in and try to remember what that stuff is.

I did it on my TT's about four years ago. Bought a spare set ahead of time so I wouldn't have the bike down for an extended period. All I did was rough sand them first to get rid of any clear coating, next I ground down some of the casting marks, then finally went to a step by step sanding moving toward finer and finer grit. After all that, cranked up the bench grinder with polishing pads installed and buffed away. Not once did I have to remove the stem, they came out fine.

Black Dog Thanks. Trees were way easier than the fork tubes. So you've got the raked trees coming? Believe it or not, with all the snow we have had, I still havent been able to ride my Valk with the new trees. Its killing me. They sure look good though. Let me know how you make out with them.
