Comments to follow....

Headed south out of OKC on I 35, was checking the right rear view mirror, looked back ahead and a freaking sofa (later found to be a restaurant booth) appeared. Car ahead of me swerved as well as did I, but I needed another 8 inches.
Was lucky to get the front wheel past the object and the bike turned into a 60 mph 1100 pound projectile impacting on the engine guard.
I was amazed to see I still had steering and the engine kept running, albeit, at about 10% power. The object self-destructed and some part hit my right calf, knee and foot like a baseball bat....dang that hurt. My right index finger covering the brake lever got a cut through my glove that required 5 stitches.
Its 95 degrees and I am trying to decide what would be the benefit of pulling over or head on down 12 miles to the interstate to the Norman hospital and maybe get some help. Decided on the hospital.
Calf turned out to not be smashed but it sure is getting fat and starting to turn purple.
As mentioned, the engine continued to run on the left hand 3 cylinders and could actually maintain about 50-60 mph. Pretty sure the cylinder head is toast and don't know about pistons and such.  So, will disassemble as needed and see if it will go back on the road.....love that old bike, hate to see her hurt... Angry

Shocked A restaurant booth, that's a new one!  I remember ol' DirtyDan posting about clobbering his belt cover on a big rock in the road, pretty sure it put his bike out of commission.  Hope yours fares better.

Sorta gives a new meaning to a drive through restaurant. Hope the healing goes well. You will need all new valves on the side the belt broke. New timing covers but maybe that’s all. Sounds very lucky!!

Yeah, don't mind being lucky, but I hope experience from 300K riding kept me alive.... Not being cocky, I just want to stay vertical and healthy for another 15 or 20 thousand before hanging it up.

The sorry part is there was no burger with this booth!!!!!

Still find it hard to believe this bike ran for 12 miles sputtering on 3 cylinders to get me to the ER. Then when patched up, it started right up and I drove it home another 4 miles.

Just a follow up on the 'incident', casual observations.

One would think with 3 eye witnesses you would have a clear picture of what happened. The first ew, me, saw a small two seater sofa with both seat cushions removed.
The seond ew saw a small upright piano and the third saw a restaurant style booth.
I would write off the piano because the wood imbedded in various frame parts was painted a bright red/orange. I saw no fabric remnants  to support my sofa perception.....so.....WTF.

Anyway, sorting out the damage to the engine revealed the following:
The can timing gear/pulley was smacked by the engine guard as it bent backwards breaking the timing belt cover on the right engine side.
When the impact occurred, the cam and rocker arm  assy were apparently stopped/frozen in place but driven rearwards about 1/16 of an inch. The cam has a flange at the front that sets the end play, the flange broke off the lip in the head that limits its rearward clearance,
So, that made the head unusable.
I sourced a head assy from Pinwall (who is closing up) with 70K and complete with a cam....wanted a cam already mated to the head/rocker arm. The assy looked really good so no qualms about using it. After all, it has some 240K miles less than the cam in my damaged head.
Anyway, checking the markings on the cam, its a R1 and my cam is a R2.....not going down that rat hole, so mic'ed my cam and found zero runout on the journals and cam lobes within specs, so I'm using it. I figure the head/rockerarm assy is line bored and if the bearing surfaces are in decent shape that any cam in decent shape should work just fine..... Had to adjust the valves a bit, only off by 2-3 thou.
Ran a compression check on the new 70K head and found 144 +_3 on that side and 140 +_2 on the 310K side.  Liveable.....
Installed timing belt and timed the engine. Started it up and it ran like crap.......then realized it was out of gas......duh.
What is really interesting, the cam was instantly frozen  in a spot where not one valve was bent or any piston having any impact marks......go figure.

So, just gotta get the fairing replaced and pods back on and the phat gal will be whole again.....put about 100 miles on her this first ride and am still amazed at the pure beast mode she is capable of....

DDT's guardian angles have been busy.  There is always a new way to crash.  Glad you came out with as little damage as you did.  The bike healed faster than you.  Hope there is some info as to how the furniture got there.  Someone needs to pay your bills.. Include labor.

WOW!!!  If that flange had not broken off of the lip, you could have put a belt on it and kept on riding.  That is very strange that there were NO bent rods or piston damage.  I was not so lucky on Ole Blue.

Hope you are healing up well.

I still can't imagine how the cam got frozen in the 'no harm' position....

This was a 3 step crash as I remember:
Step 1......I see it.....OH crap....
Step 2.....I hit it.....Is this it!
Step 3: Bike is still upright....Now what do I do?

All this in a few hundred milliseconds.....I am thankful for the things that went my way..... cooldude

Got another 100 on the bike today and all seems still ok, got a bit of seepage from the valve cover bolts but that seems to be lessening as the seals heat up and reform to their new position.

I picked up a doner IS that I think I will make into a rat rod....just a windshield, no other plastic parts, no rear fender...etc,,,,should be fun. Gotta rebuild the carbs first and find something for a gas tank.   maybe a two gallon beer keg...... crazy2

Looks like I will have saddle bags, rear trunk, shorty windscreen, mounting hardware, etc to put up for sale sometime soon.

Right now just enjoying some rare pleasant riding temps in Oklahoma and going for it. Maybe this was a reasonably gentle reminder to stay alert at all times and not get too comfortable while viewing the scenery....

How exactly did that obstacle materialize in the road?

Here, OSP would conduct an investigation and if the perp was identified they're be cited to Hellenbach (nowhere near Luckenbach, FWIW) for unsecured load.

A number of years ago, one of our Real Men of Genius (tm) lost a whole bunch of sheet metal screws out of the back of a company work truck on a merge ramp from one interstate to the next. Many flats and a lot of cleanup resulted. The combined insurance chargebacks and fines may have put the outfit out of business. Rightly so.

There doesn't seem to be any witnesses to seeing the object fall off any vehicle. There is also a lack of cameras in this area so ODOT could not provide any info other than they were not negligent in picking the object up and removing it......kind of like the fox guarding te hen house.
