Not sure what your 40 is, but considered a .22 upper/conversion for it (If available)? Keeps ya' more practiced with your "real" gun...
But, for cheap plinking, I love my Beretta NEOS, as well as my Ruger MKII, and my 10/22, and my, well... It's just hard to go wrong with a good semi auto .22 for just plain old cheap fun!

I had a Ruger Mark 2 Target with a 6 inch barrel. An absolutely excellent target gun! I use to hit the weather vein on our barn at 50 yards away. If I were going to buy another gun, that would be it.

If you are wanting a pistol in .22, look at a Walther P22. These are super little pistols and Walther dosen't make any junk. If it is a rifle your are wanting, think about one of the Savage's with the Accutrigger. Super accurate and reasonably priced.

Depends on what you normally shoot. I like a 1911, so, since the Browning Buckmark has the same type of layout of the features... I chose one of those. If you stay consistent from one gun to another, then you don't have to "think about it" when it's time to fire under stress. |

I should have specified, a handgun. Thanks for the suggestions. It's actually for my oldest son. He shoots a glock so I guess he needs to stay with a semi-auto. He shoots every week and has friends over as well that shoot his guns for fun.

Try to go to a gun show and look for a Colt Woodsman, 10 cap., shoots like a long gun.  |

I like the looks of the Walthers too but a 3.4" barrel is going to reduce the accuracy and fun in plinking (or increase the practice time), and the longer barrels get expensive.

Personally I have not (More of a 1911 or XD guy than a Glock guy) but I've heard good things about the various Glock .22 conversions (Unfortunately, I don't recall the specific makes), and figured I'd mention it as an option for what Stormrider was trying to accomplish... Or, IMHO it's worth looking in to at least... |

If your son is use to a .40 Glock i doubt if a .22 is gonna push the same buttons. Making your own loads would save some money unless you have to buy all the equipment first. It would still pay off in the long run. Especially if you want to be proficient with high powered rifles.

I got one because of its small grip to teach marksmanship to my young son. I wanted something that better fit his hand. With a Ruger Mk 2 or a Beretta Neos U22 I can run my steel plate rack in about 2.8 seconds for 6 plates. With the little walther, sometimes even with careful aim at 10yds you can miss an eight inch plate. To me thats completely unacceptable. Its a cute gun, functions well, but isnt accurate AT ALL. Yea its got a shorter barrel (3.4 inch) than the Ruger and Beretta I mentioned. However, with my 638 S&W and its 1.9 inch barrel I can hit em every shot. Also, the front sight post is a crappy little plastic one that is prone to pop off if hit with anything... and by anything I mean my son popped mine off on the first day while holstering it. Luckily we were on concrete and quickly found it. After putting a couple hundred rounds through the gun, I was fed up with it and consigned it through a local gun store. There are several good .22 pistols out there (Ruger Mk 2, Beretta Neos, S&W Model 22, Browning Buckmark, ...) but IMHO the little P22 isnt one of em. |

Thanks for all the great input. I talked to James about the Glock conversion and is how I would go just for familiarity. This has go me to thinking I may go that route as well. A 22 on the farm works great for varmits as well as plinking.
