I have made it home from S.C. and this morning (sorry to miss you again Jim) saw some video of the area near
Brevard North Carolina and it was pretty awful

It reminded me of the damage I saw near Red Lodge with all the bridges and roads destroyed as well as the loss of people's homes.

We also heard that where we go in Florida got hit pretty badly (Siesta Key)

I am glad that I coughed up the cash to have all 4 of my 4" drain lines power jetted the full length of my property last month.  I have a sump pump and the french drain systems and the driveway grades but still when the tsunami goes down the road and the water pressure sends the manhole covers skyward
you need all the draining ability that you can get.  If you have been to my house you know what I mean

Wind and Water can be a lethal combination indeed

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been suffering from this hurricane and flooding

Finally spoke with my Sister and Brother In Law yesterday.   They have a cabin type home near Lake Lure, NC.   No Power, no TV, lights or water.   Been that way for several days.  Offered to bring them a generator and fuel but, was told the roads are washed out, no way in or out.   He said he's going down to the creek to get water so they can flush the toilets.   They drove up to the top of the mountain on a washed-out gravel drive so they could make that call and recharge their cell phones in their truck.  While not normally true, they don't have cell service except on top of the mountain now.

Not much I can do to help till those roads are fixed.   Undecided

Count your blessings that you can count them alive and well. Hope they have sufficient fuel and other supplies until roads are open / power is restored.

Remote mountain places you never heard of really need help.  Presently, the greatest need is funding for the coordinated relief effort.  Here is how to contribute:

You can live without food for weeks but not water

They are in the glove compartment of each car

But this one is more suited to a whole family when SHTF

I have not looked but is the "Starlink" system available for their use.  I figured it took some additional equipment but..... it might only need to get the App which would require access to the internet for a few minutes.  Just a thought.

Things are looking up.   BIL has been able to climb to the top of the mountain and from there he can get a cell tower signal.   After using a tank of fuel, he found a way to go a different route (eighty miles out of his normal way) and head home (FL) to get a large generator, fuel, water and food.   Due to the looting going on, my sister stayed at the mountain cabin. BIL is now on his way back to Lake Lure.

According to our local news, you can't get there from here so, just standing by.  Thanks for all the PMs and responses.

My nephew and family live in Zionville NC just north of Boone.

While they didn't get hit as severely as Asheville area, they got hit.

Their house is on a a secondary road off Rte 421 and it's pretty much a dead end going up the mountain servicing about 20 homes.

The culvert at the base washed out and vehicles can not pass.

He went down with a shovel and was able to fill in enough for foot traffic.

Good for him, neighbors helping neighbors is the way to go.

Although my BIL can't get to Lake Lure, there are several videos of what's left of that town and it ain't much.  Saw on the news that Biden has ordered a thousand active duty soldiers to come to the assistance of the hardest hit areas.   Hopefully they are engineers with the equipment to get the roads fixed, medical personnel to assist local medical facilities and searchers to find those not found.

Many of us know US 421 and the smaller roads.  News outlets show Asheville and that doesn't represent the size of the affected area in NC and TN.  Many are places most folks never heard of. Some people live far away from any town.  The affected area is almost the size of New Jersey.

Just for the record, to access the Starlink service. you need an antenna (and of course power).  Antennas range from $300 to $500.

You also must have cell service to be able to access the Starlink system to set up your account.

So, while it's cool and a good thing. it does require additional resources.  I will be considering the purchase of the "Antenna" just for emergencies such as this.  "Be Prepared".

Many of the communities that are devastated are places that most of us have ridden through at least once.

A lot of them are just wide spots in the road that if it wasn't for a small sign we'd never know it had a name.

I suspect that it will take years for these roads to be rebuilt.

Damascus, VA was also damaged:

US 58  north of Damascus is completely gone in places:

We routinely travel through Damascus when we head to Abingdon, VA.   Just there last Monday.  Just looked for the video and found it.

Wow!  the road was very nice then.  Now.....

It's even worse. They're not only doing almost nothing to help, they're threatening to arrest those who ARE helping...

There’s even brand new airspace and flight restrictions to keep any aircraft out of the area.

Helicopters from Ft. Liberty are delivering food, equipment and troops to the flood areas. They fly right over my house. The Army doesn't need recreational aircraft getting in the way. National Guard and active military troops deployed there include my neighbors.

Our town may be small but we are big proud that our people are contributing to the relief effort.

At the same time, it is said that the affected area is the size of New Jersey. Surely the entire area isn’t restricted?

Men, I don't know the present status of the airspace in Western NC.  You can look it up.

There have been private pilots on self-appointed delivery missions flying into Western NC with various "relief items".  Some of this may be items that are not needed.

Obviously, nobody wants a do-gooder private pilot with a couple hundred pounds of stuff getting in the way of an Army Blackhawk carrying tons of needed supplies and equipment.  It can happen.

Maybe if it was as like in the old days of professional journalism, reporters would be all over the place updating everyone 24-7 instead of like a third world country where days and weeks go by without a peep! The Dept of Homeland Security is as useless as tits on Mayorkas.

The private citizens stepped up and took control when there was no help and can still be of assistance. If the military pilots are as good as they claim there’s no real they can’t coordinate with the private sector and work together. They all can agree to ne on the same radio frequency and I’ll bet those military aircraft have radar available to alert to other aircraft.

Private citizens with their own helicopter aren’t just some fools sightseeing.

Mike, here's how things have been operating:

With a 300% increase in traffic over Western NC, Prior Permission Required (PPR) is in place at select airports to ensure safe skies and sustainable operations.
For all aircraft pilots, please check NOTAMs for PPR numbers before you fly.

NOTAM = Notice to Airmen.  The NOTAMs in effect may also say don't expect fuel service.  Usually, we just fly the pattern and land at small airports.  The affected airports now require permission (before you fly) to enter the area and land.

I just saw a report where NASCAR is kicking in to help and Greg Biffle is flying in supplies by helicopter. Even brought Star Link enabled phones with him to let stranded people use them to contact friends and family outside the area.

I wish I could find the article I read a couple days ago, a man from our area is putting together a donation drive and is working with airplane owners to fly supplies down south. Supposedly they secured the permission to land at 2 or 3 airports and was also looking for folks with trucks to drive supplies down. If I hadn’t had arm surgery a month ago I would have volunteered to load the van and make the trip.

This isn’t the exact article I read but it has most of the info of their mission. The website isn’t the best.

Was asked and did volunteer the use of my 28 foot enclosed cargo trailer but, the group that asked didn't have a vehicle that could pull my gooseneck so, they declined the offer.   Based on what I've read and heard on the news, it's one of those situations where you can't get there from here so, I have no idea how they plan to get the donations to North Carolina but, they did seem determined.

Rams, their hearts are in the right place. The disaster response organizations in NC have advised people to donate money, not food items. Receiving miscellaneous items in large quantity is a slow process as each individual item must be inspected and categorized. Some of it will be discarded.

Our relief organizations can order pallates of needed food at wholesale prices. Money donated today could feed people Tuesday. My wife and I have worked similar efforts and agree.

The majority of the people living in the affected areas vote Republican.

The Biden/Harris administration has proven before that they aren't likely to help people who vote Republican.
