I have an Ultimate Big Boy seat set for my Interstate. It is about 8-9 years old and is in need of recovering. Since I do not do too much two-up riding all I need is the drivers seat repaired. I call Des at Ultimate and he informed me that they no longer can make that style seat due to not being able to get the same material and also have since changed the design of the seat. I am going to look locally for someone to help me but I do not have a lot of faith that they will be able to help. What are my options? Anyone have a seat that they would like to sell?

If the cushion is in good shape, just take it to an upholstery shop and they should be able to cover it.
Otherwise search for a motorcycle saddle maker in your area.

Wow... I find it hard to believe that Des could not help out with re-padding/covering that seat.  You sure you talked with Des?

You could always check with Mean City Cycles  (www.meancitycycles.com) and see if they can help you out.

I have the stock IS seat off my 99 IS.  Let me know if you are interested in it.

Take it to a reputable seat & upholstry re pair shop.

They can fix it, no problem.

If you don't know of one, call the dealer of your vehicle make & ask them where they take their seats & etc for repair.

Talk to one of the service writers at your dealer.

I bought the one in the picture from VRCC members Kendall & Des . Someone had took a knife to it while it was parked . I had it recovered with marine grade vinyl it cost me $75.00 for the seat and backrest.

I too found it hard to believe that Dez said no to repairing it. I believe him when he says he does not have the same material but I would have thought him to offer to re-upholster both seats to make a matching set (for a fee of course).

I was also surprised by his response. He offered to sell me an almost-new complete set for $935. Since the bike has over 100,000 miles on it and all I need is the driver's seat, this was not an option. I will work on the suggestions regarding another re-upholster doing the work but a good match to rest of the set is unlikely. Obviously I am not very happy with the outcome of this as I have always heard good things about Des and his product. I know I am not the only one that will find themselves in this position.

Question:

When you talked to Des, where did you call?

CANADA
or
Daytona?

If it wasn't Canada, you did not talk to Des.

He probably pulled out of Canada yesterday headed for Bike Week and his Florida store............. with a fully loaded semi trailer living quarters rig.

I called the Canada office and talked to Des. He did not give me any choice except for buying a totally new designed 4 piece set or a used set for $935. Remember, I have an Interstate which has a four piece seat. I wrote to Meancitycylces.com in hopes that they can help me.

Greyghost - Does your seat have a square post for the backrest or a round one? After talking to Des, that is what designates the new from the old design. Do you have a picture? Thanks

Paul,

I see you live in IL.  There is a place up here in Milwaukee (Back in the Saddle) that does all sorts of work, on seats, and making custom leather/vynal items.  He did a great job, on two custom items for me, and being so close, maybe you might want to give him a call.

Send me an email, and I'll try to hook ya up, if you are interested.

I have a Ultimate Bigboy seat as well. Have had it for two years. The first year I had it I decided to use it only on trips and shows. For around town I used the stock seat. But last year I decided that I got the seat why not use it. When riding around town I dont use the backrest. After awhile I noticed two small holes in the cover above the backrest receptical. I took pictures of them and sent it to Des as well as a pic of the custom blue stitching turning white.

He got back to me and told me that it happened  because I am of larger stature and that without the back rest I am "riding" up on the back of the seat and caused the holes. Than he tried to sell me a Kingboy seat. I told him I dont like that seat because it reguires a seperate backrest. Than he told me they charge $150.00 to recover the seat. Than I asked if he would discount it if I bought a pass seat and backrest. NOPE. So I sent the seat back for recovering and ordered the rear seat and backrest (didnt have much choice at this point). $500.00 bucks later I got my seat back
Needless to say I am a little pissed. You guys all have talked about Des and his customer support. I didn't see it. I will not buy another Ulitimate seat.......

Paul i had the same thing happen, Not here to bash Des, I had damage on my Big Boy and called Des (YES IT WAS HIM) He also told me he dose not redo old seats BUT! he had a display model that he sold me for $250, The seat is still to small @ 6'2 i feel as if i am sitting on the Gas tank, Now after reading this post i will just bring it to a local shop and carve the back foam and have it modified here, no offense to Ultimate just 'constructive criticism' I have learned a lot from my customers cooldude

I'm not surprised to see this thread. I had this same experience with Ultimate Many years ago. Short story is that I had to buy a new drivers seat. The original busted one is still in the box in my garage..
When I posted about it on the original board I was blasted to pieces by the "defenders of Des". Many posts on here about his customer service but I found it to be otherwise. He's still makin money but Russell Day long gets my business now.

As for the material, it should recover for little money. We  have a problem with the heat here and my original seat went to ribbons in 2 years. I had it recovered in a cream tan to match the tan color. My tourer is the jade and cream. It looked great and got many positive comments. Then I put the black beaded seat cover on it. The seat can be 160 degrees here after work.  All three pieces was $110.
