Why do some of you think there is such a shortage on (in my case) 9mm and .380 ammo? Is there a "stockpiling" going on? These weapons don't seem like the choice to do battle with and the amount of times you will need to use it otherwise will be zero if everything goes well.

Lotta panic buying and stockpiling still going on, plus 9mm is the standard military round for sidearms, so a lot of production is going to government contracts... On the .380 front it's never been a terribly popular round, but in the last few years there have been a LOT of lil' .380 pistols sold to freshly minted CHL/CCW holders, thus there's been a much higher demand for .380 than the ammo makers ever expected... That's my take on the situation at least... Personally... Buy a reloading press... Remember, freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who OWN a press!

Depends on where you are. Most cartridges are very available now considering what they were last year. Seems everywhere I went last year, the shelves were empty.

Gun guy told me cause they are making 9mm. Then they switch to .380. Everyone buys them up then as they go back to 9mm. Back and forth.

In the shop I work in weekends we have been getting lots of .380, 9mm, 45acp and most handgun ammo. we seem to have a harder time getting a good varity of rifle ammo. Seems we can only get one bullet type and weight in any cartridg, for example, we will get 30.06 in 150 gr but can't get it in 180gr. The hardest thing for us to get is CCI Stingers, they have been unavailable for moths now. Also, we haven't seen any 62 gr .223 for a very long time, 55 gr is all we can get.

Yep, that's my understanding too. The .380 is just a 9mm short so most if not all of the ammo companies make them on the same equipment as the 9mm. With the huge demand for 9mm from the government and elsewhere not much time left on the machinery for catching up with the new, huge demand for .380. I’ve just started casting my own bullets for the .380 but I haven’t yet accumulated enough .380 brass to load any so they are still untried.

I don't know NJ law, but assuming ammo is not registered there, I don't think bringing lawfully purchased ammo in can be prohibited. You may have to show a license. Get your best mail order price, have it shipped to your closest friend over the border and go pick it up. Fokem!
You could call your local NJ gun shop (assuming there are any) and ask a few questions.

You have to show a license and do paperwork when buying AMMO???? Not here in PA... and I don't recall doing it in VA 15 years ago either..... Walmart has been getting better with there ammo stock levels lately. I guess most people have been stocking up and are about topped off or something.......

I stand partially corrected. Federal law is this (and ID may be required). Under federal law, it is illegal to sell (1) long gun ammunition to anyone under age 18 and (2) handgun ammunition to anyone under age 21 (18 USC 922(b)(1), 27 CFR 478. 99(b)). According to BATF, a licensee may sell interchangeable ammunition such as a . 22 cal. rimfire to a person less than age 21 (but age 18 or older) if the dealer is satisfied that the ammunition is for use in a rifle. If the ammunition is intended for use in a handgun, the 21-year-old minimum age requirement applies. But see this: http://www.nraila.org/Search/?q=buying%20ammunition
