Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: January 15, 2025, 07:17:35 AM »

Baby, It's Cold Outside!

Brrrr!!! Can you say, "Polar Vortex?" I'd be hard pressed to offer a scholarly explanation of that ice-implying expression, but I do find it quite easy to describe its chilling effects! Dang! I'm sure glad this place has a heating system in good working order... I've proclaimed this apartment a 'No Freeze Zone' for the duration of my visit.

I'm also glad I didn't postpone grocery shopping or any other preparations for the arrival of this well-announced event. I can remain comfortably inside for several days up to a week or more now and avoid the worst of the plunging temps.

When a Valk is one's only means of transportation, hunkering down becomes a most important option... its timing even more so... Adequate preparations aren’t absolutely essential, however, as 'work arounds' (like Uber and DoorDash) are available, but preparations are still danged important!

Simple cooking and cleaning chores, some interesting reading, some modest TV watching, and of course lots of naps will comprise the bulk of my entire itinerary for the next few days... I may just have a knack for this leisure living thing after all... And dare I say it... for planning when it becomes unavoidably necessary, as well...

Of course, we have traveled in much colder weather, and we obviously did survive. I can't say it was pleasant at all, but it was rewarding in the fact we were able to relish successful rides especially when we had to overcome any real adversity…

Future bragging rights, though, were the main gain from those experiences, as all the normally great sensations of riding were sadly muted by laser-like focus upon the misery of... you know... We human beings are indeed a curious lot, huh...?

One of the major ironies and contradictions of the riding experience, I’ve come to realize, is how we always seem to recall the adversities of our most difficult excursions in vivid detail more than the easy ones, and how those are the ones we often chat about most later on… One might logically think it would be the reverse...

Near perfect rides are luxuriously savored and thoroughly enjoyed, of course… while they occur. However, it’s the recollections of unpleasantries faced and overcome that linger longer in our memories for some inexplicable reason… We aren’t shy about extoling ‘enhanced’ tall tales about those triumphs to anyone who will listen, either!

I just peered outside to see if anything was going on. A light shower had fallen since my last gander at the world beyond these walls, so now I’m doubly glad we’d chosen to stay put on such a gloomy day! Since it had been rain and not sleet, the Vortex thingy must not have even fully arrived yet.

Yeah-yeah I know, a future brag opportunity has obviously been forgone by staying put. The comfort instead seemed to have been a very solid trade-off choice right that minute, however! Nope, I ain't sorry for that choice one bit either. Soon I'll be even happier! Things could always be worse, though...

Valker sent this recent pic taken at his place!

Not much else to speculate on or report about right this moment, so... I think I'll just go rustle-up some bacon and eggs... Because I can! No sir! It ain’t cold and/or wet at all in here…

Bruce,
This is logical and proof that the 7 Ps are applicable.

Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

Although, I can't take credit for any of the planning, I just go with the flow.   Besides, I refuse to look outside from my hibernation safe spot.   Wink

N/E Illinois cold but no snow.  I have ridden in the snow many times on two wheels , but I doubt if I would try the Valk.

A picture from my abode would look much like Valkers with exception of the streets being plowed. We haven’t been above freezing temps for more than a few hours for going on 10 days now and the forecast ain’t looking great! But Spring is just around the corner, which is sort of like waiting on Christmas when your five.

Ron,

I find it impossible to deny the efficiency and benefit of good planning. I also find it helpful, on the otherhand, to experiment with the reverse in terms of discovery of the benefits of that way of playing around with old habits and rigid thinking. A balance would be ideal, of course, but... I'm still working to find that! In the meantime, I blunder on...

DDT (12)

John,

Yep, frigid temps have engulfed much of our continent! Some areas have even had exceptional winter precip on top of that... I doubt the efficacy of such a forecast, but a few flakes are even in our forecast way down here in LA in a few days! We'll see... I share your optimism about Spring. I also dread the probable effects of Summer also not far down the road either...

DDT (12)

Jimmy,

He claims it's actual snow! I wonder if it might give him pause to wonder about the condition of the local fire hydrant system and water supply, though! No worries, we have the best politicians money can buy looking out for us...

DDT (12)

Dennis,

You're right, of course. All rides (well, with a few exceptions!) are good, it's just that some are better than others... I am staying warm and dry the best I can... You do the same, my friend, and we can meet for an update when weather improves... Maybe some country cooking, too!

DDT (12)

Joe,

I'm in LA... Enterprise, AL... Just a couple of blocks from Larry's BBQ, where we dined several years ago on one of your 'After Christmas Rides'... Remember? Thanks for your comments and compliments. I miss the times we've shared over the decades... I do hope we can add to that treasury of fond memories again!

Bruce, I have my spine surgery scheduled for Feb. 6th. That seems like a good plan with our weather forecast here. Nice enough to ride today and tomorrow then not above freezing for a week straight and temps near 0°F. I think I'll take a ride today and tomorrow then find stuff in the house to do for a while.

It's so cold, windy and icy here, which I've been walking in every day for weeks, I finally plugged in my big treadmill in my front room and just did 70 minutes at 2.5mph.  I prefer to be outdoors (and get out of the dang house), but holy crap is it nice to not freeze my face off for a change.  I had not been on that thing for several years, but it worked like a champ (around 20ys old).  It gives you speed, distance, time and even pulse rate (if you grab the handles, though I prefer upright arm swing while walking, not holding on bending over).

I put on some good music, have a bottle of cold water, wear my good walking shoes (which are no good in the cold), and look out my big picture window at all the snow outside.  After losing body fat, I never sweat when walking (except hot summer), but after a while I took off my long sleeve T for comfort. Shirtless in January is nice.

I will return outdoors when decent weather returns.

Eric,

WOW! I didn't recall you having any surgeries planned... Yes, I do recollect discussions of your ongoing back issues, and I vaguely remember you saying it may at some point require serious medical attention. I wish you the best of luck with that, and I hope your absence from your many saddles is brief!

I absolutely agree that should such be required, this is deffinitely the time of year to go for it! Then again, you have proven yourself to be rather thoughtful and deliberate in your decision making. Good call, my friend... keep us posted!

DDT (12)

Jess,

Sounds like once again you have an outstanding back-up plan! Good call by you also! Most of those treadmill, exercise machines in many of the households of friends and relatives... Usually can be viewed burried under clothes or other items. Storage places more than anything, it seems, but you... Well, is their a story behind this? Are you some kind of non-conformest? Whatever it is, it does appear to work for you, so... Walk on, my friend!!!

I have plenty of junk/stuff Bruce, but it's all thrown in closets, shelving units and under stairs, not out in my living room.

The dang thing is so huge and heavy, it barely came in the front door (by multiple strong men), and has stayed in the front room ever since because it's too big to be moved anywhere else in the house (like an upstairs spare bedroom where I wish it was).

While I still prefer being outdoors (and getting out of the house), the treadmill has 'give' and is much easier on old ankles, knees and hips.  And it's perfectly flat, unlike my cracked and heaved up sidewalks, and streets with cars routinely doing 50 in a 25 zone.  But best of all, since I can't go miles without one 'old-man-prostate pee stop', I don't have to hunt for places in my neighborhood to do it (the neighbors don't like you doing it in their shrubbery  2funny).  Pausing the treadmill and using the bathroom when it's time is so much easier.
