I was in traffic, heavy traffic, yesterday and passed a sign that said, "Speed Limit 65".  Most of the vehicles were traveling much less than 65.  When we hit the Russian time traffic we were slowed to 30 mph and below.

What is wrong with drivers?  Do they have no respect for instructions rendered by traffic signs?   tickedoff

Nearly every single time I depart for my usual ride in VA horse country West, I cross I-95 over a tall overpass, and the traffic is backed up bumper to bumper as far as I can see to the horizon in both directions.  In a posted 65.  Good luck with that.    Wink

I hear you can actually use that road in the middle of the night, maybe.

No worries here. Parts of Iowa are unlimited regarding speed zones.

Haven't you learned that if you want to use I-95, you AVOID rush hour ??

That used to be true Scott, but I-95 in NoVA and the 495 beltway around DC has turned into permanent gridlock sunup to sundown work days and even weekends are very bad.  I just never get on any of that in bikes or truck anymore, ever, for the last several years.  You might move through Sunday morning (and nights).

On a trip down south one winter I mistakenly took I95 though D.C. at late afternoon.  Big mistake.

After sitting in traffic for ever not moving, We got off and had dinner at a restaurant owned by a ex Marine Sargent.

He was very cordial and spent time talking with us, so that was kinda worth it.

I asked if there was an accident up the road and he said "No, just everyday traffic grid lock"

    Yikes!  Couldn't live like that.

I guess it depends on the definite of "southern South Carolina".

We have not visited much in that area in recent years.  We have visited the Pawleys Island area several times in the last few years and found the Hampton Inn there nice.  Also, there are good places to eat across the road that are within walking distance.  That is usually one of our things to look for.

In my part of the country there are two signs that causes me to laugh.

One is the Yield Sign on Railroad crossings.

The other that states you can increase your speed to 50 mph with a 35 mph curve sign within 30' of the 5o mph sign.  Why not put the increased speed sign on the other side of curve?

See them mainly in Northern CA, not OR.

The one that makes me laugh is the Men Working temp signs put up by road crews.

It should say Man Working, with one guy with a shovel down in the hole and the rest of them standing there watching him.  And often with the obligatory one girl.

we left 8am and stopped in Florence SC around 530pm Took the express lanes south of DC  No idea what that cost but it was well worth it watching mile after mile of standing traffic before Richmond area
How can you stand that Jess?

Today we left around 730 in the morning fog that burned off by 9am and got here in Siesta Key FL
    around 315pm

Traffic was steady around 80-90mph for a good 200 miles in SC and Georgia except for a couple of places WAZE said cops were hiding   I always let a car be the rabbit and stay a few hundred yards back
It was like following Mike (Psycho) driving around Phoenix  Grin
once on I75 it is stop and go for 150 miles from north of I4 all the way to Sarasota

It is REALLY nice down here

Since you didn't prepay to use those express lanes Evan, the cost shouldn't be more than a 2d mortgage.  It was never worth prepaying to me.

As I said, I have abandoned ever using I-95 and the DC beltway ever again.  Any amount of suburban local traffic is better (and faster) than that nightmare.

I-95 services the entire Eastern Seaboard of the US (and needs widened to 6 lanes in each direction all the way).

Except every summer, I drive up to see my mom in MI, and leave at like 3-4AM to avoid the gridlock.  I get hit with the PA OH Turnpike tolls too.

I hope you have a nice vacation.

    Yes I have ez pass

EZ Pass - a necessity for the East Coast. Almost all of them take it for their tollroads / bridges / etc. Also saves money over them just reading your tag number and sending you the bill in the mail.

We have one for our bi-annual trip to Maryland for the wife's family reunion. It reduces the cost of the PA Turnpike by 50%.

Interesting Scott.  What does it cost to get one, and does it have to be renewed periodically, paying again?

I'm never getting on my local freeways again, but once a year I drive up the PA and OH turnpike to visit family, and back.  Do you know if it would be worth it for just that?

We got ours from the PA Turnpike authority, but since VA also uses it, you should be able to find a source for it. You can also Google EZ Pass for sources for one. IF you intend to use it on your motorcycle, stick IN a bag (I have one for my Valk for Kansas Turnpike Authority).

We find it useful , you are supposed to put money on it first, but - you can find out what the rules are for using it. I know you need the tag number of the vehicle using it. I think money put on it stays available for use. When you consider how much it can cost to take the PA Turnpike end to end, it is certainly "worth it". You can also use it on I495 Express lanes in VA, as well as the Dulles Toll Road / extensions.

Thank you Scott.  I was just being lazy asking and not doing my own research.

Like most things technology related, if I can get by without it, I do.

I'm done taking 9 hr freeway combat MC rides to MI (or anywhere), but it would seem to make good sense for my truck.

    That’s exactly what it is.

Instead of sitting in line at a toll booth/plaza an ez-pass holder can supposedly ride right through.

In NJ our Garden State Parkway was to be paid for by tolls and once those expenses were paid off the tolls were to be removed.

Well they figured out as long as work on the Parkway was continuing and debt was accumulating the tollls could and would remain.

Jess, I got my free in MA. EZ Pass, put bike and truck registrations on it, and put $50.00 on every year. At the end of each riding season I usually had 10-15 bucks left on it.
2 years ago, we took the truck to Fla. to see my sister and some friends.  I had added $ 175 before we left because I didn’t know how much I’d need.
We visited the granddaughter in Midlothian, Va., then down 95 to Florida.  Drove all over Tampa/Orlando area visiting family and friends. Returned via Atlanta to see friends, onto S.C., 77 to 80 to 84 then home.
When I got the monthly statement, only $5.15 was deducted. Ok, maybe next month will be the rest. Nope, never was charged another dime. And I went under plenty of them overhead stanchions that read the EZPass.
I think there’s still $150 bucks still in my account….gotta win once in awhile…..
BTW, you can set it up with a cc, bank account, or add cash before needed. The EZ Pass office is 3 miles from my home, so adding cash isn’t a problem.

Kansas has gone to cashless tolling - if you don't have a K-Tag (either on the windshield or the plastic encased one), they take a picture and lookup your vehicle by your tag number, and send you a bill in the mail. And charge you twice as much for the toll....

I believe that is how most of these systems are handled - if you don't have the tag / transponder  -  your plate gets scanned and they send you the bill off that...

What gets interesting is when you rent a car, and don't have the registration device - when they run the plate, it goes to the rental company, who would pay, and they they should be able to look up who was renting the vehicle at that time and send the renter a bill for it. The one time we rented a car to come to Kansas, then went on out to Denver, there was some toll roads north of Denver  / I-70 that we took, and I'm assuming Enterprise did not send us a bill for it... we would have paid it if they had.
