My ‘97 Standard clutch slips at 2500 RPM + under relatively normal throttle.
I was running Mobil 1, did a detergent flush and went back to Honda oil.
That did not fix the issue.
I will be doing the slave cylinder rebuild and system cleaning this week and hope that fixes things.
Too include the little bleed hole in the master.

No problem with lever position  to indicate rivet failure but of if I do need to replace that, is this the correct part to order ?

Yes, that looks correct.

Can't believe how much that costs.

But I don't remember what I paid over 20 years ago either. Roll Eyes

Usually the main symptom of rivet failure is felt at the clutch lever and clutch slipping can be a symptom, but not as common.

Have you had the rear wheel off lately and checked out the pinion cup?

Good luck, hope you solve it.

$50.08 from Honda DirectLine back in 2010. I keep images of all my old orders for reference.

I've always wondered if you could replace the rivets if none were available. It's definitely not worth your time if you can get a new one for $84.

Thanks for your replies.

I can give plenty of advice on 50 and 70 year old Harleys but now that I’m retired and on a budget I need to know about Valk stuff before I waste any money. I bought this bike new thinking I’d only have to do scheduled maintenance well into my advancing age. Quite a rude awakening to have this clutch slipping issue and thanks to some previous reading here I know I can tiptoe through the troubleshooting steps before getting into the oil.

I did have the rear wheel off last summer for a new tire and everything looked fine.

I have a complete machine shop in my back yard that I have used modifying my HDs but I’ll buy that disk before I try to make and install rivets.

yes that is the damper plate. u will need the plate on either side it since they will be damaged by the rivets.

that is all I replace on my '98.

in '97 the Valkyrie Clutch plates are an upgrade compared to the '88-'96 Goldwing GL1500s. '97 to '00 all got the upgrade. actually it was only two plates that are different.
The clutch packs are know to last 300+k miles in the heavier Goldwings while pulling trailers. I bought a spare basket assembly on ebay, pre-'97 which had over 300k miles on it. I measured the plates and they were all within Honda specs.

check part cost here. usually about the same, but only have to spend $75 for free shipping

Ron Ayers is where I buy all of my parts.  They are $81.33 this morning.  I would buy the plates on either side of the dampener plate, due to any damage the rivets might have caused.

Hmmm....  Pressure plate no longer available...... But the clutch spring is.

Thanks for the additional responses and suggestions.

Some places in stock, some on back order. I’m thinking I should buy now and not take any chances of losing out altogether. I can buy a radiator hose and some exhaust gaskets to get free shipping. cooldude

I'm having the same slippage at 2500+ RPM's, but mine is a 2003 w/68K miles. Gears shift fine, but do notice disengagement/engagement with the lever way out, more than usual lately; like just barely squeezing it. I'm hoping it's the slave cylinder too.

Update…
I ordered the plates from Partzilla. Shipped out the next day.
I scheduled my slave cylinder work for the day they were to arrive.
The day before scheduled arrival, a USPS track found the package in Nashua NH. The 5th east coast sorting facility that was further and further from far west TX. Vanished from tracking for 2 days.

I put the bike up on the lift and then read the FSM. My lift adapter rests on the side stand bracket. Did all the wet work, got the slave loose but just couldn’t clear the one screw. Back on the ground, found the perfect pieces of wood for under the right engine guard, removed the side stand bracket and then found a reasonably clean and fully functional slave. Not my problem. I’m guessing it’s rivets.
I put the side stand bracket on the mill and removed material to allow clearance for future slave maintenance.

The PO finally delivered my parts yesterday after an 11 day voyage. Now to find the time…

I salute your ingenuity, but wonder about removing structure from the side stand.

Honda engineers went very far to reduce the weight of these bikes as shown by the triangular part missing.  They left what was decided was needed to support the bike and you've reduced that.

I hope you never have an issue, but to compromise the stand to make servicing a part once or twice in its lifetime seems suspect.

When I use my bike jack for any extended work or hard wrench pulling, I get out two jack stands and put them under the forward engine guards, then let the jack down just enough to get the bike equally supported by both jack stands and the bike jack.  At that point the bike is rock solid and I could trip and fall onto it, and it's not going anywhere.

It’s a family of parts item and fits 82 different models, to include Tourers which can weigh literally hundreds of pounds more than my little ‘97 Standard. I’m sure it’s been given an added percentage of safety margin above a fully loaded Tourer so I have no qualms whatsoever about nibbling away some clearance from a very nice forging. I did mutter a few expletives about the Engineers who chose that particular design with zero consideration towards maintenance and Mechanics.

I’ve worked with some incredible Engineers. I’ve also been responsible for seeing a few join the unemployment line. Notches on my file handle.

Watched a couple vids and decided to order some more parts before I delve into the cases.

I have an old set of jack stands that I’ll modify to work with the engine guards. Thanks Jess for giving me some shop time.

My jack stands are exactly like yours.  Except not orange (LOL).

I needed no mods (?).   Unless you're trying to go taller.

So now my 2nd parts order from Partzilla has also gone astray. Took them 3 days to ship and now it’s missing in the mail.  Very mysterious.
My jack stands are ready as of today but we’re being buried in dust and 40+ mph winds for the 30th + time this year. This nano dust gets everywhere.
I’m really gonna have to get my work area cleaned up and hope I can keep it that way before I open up the cases.

Regarding the jack stands… I never really trust things that don’t clamp or have a positive fixation. I have equipment, so I make it into something I know won’t surprise me. Those are now dedicated Valk stands.

Some good ideas to stabilize the bike.

I used a wheel chock and a couple of straps from the ceiling on the  handlebars.

never put straps to handlebars, always put them to the triple clamps.

The PO found my shipment. Partzilla sends stuff in the highest quality box with a perfect label. I simply can’t fathom how the PO sent both my shipments so far astray.

I have what I need but in the interim my eye surgeon moved my cataract surgeries to yesterday and this next Monday so now I’m on hold for a few weeks. Just in time for triple digit temps.

Well I had my right cataract done. Was completely blind in that eye for 4 days. Surgeon said it was a “difficult “ extraction. Did not do the left. Also no longer have my perfect near vision. 50 years ago I learned how to sharpen drill bits by hand and could still do that easily. Can’t focus close up to do that anymore. Maybe in time…

Picked up a SERIOUS staph infection in my left elbow from a chair arm in a doctors waiting rooms.
3 hrs from “Gee what’s that” to the ER and two weeks of two different antibiotics. If I had waited overnight I might have lost my arm.

So yesterday I got released to do heavy work and today got the Valk up on the stands.

I don't like that lift setup at all, esp., when working under the unit.
accident waiting to happen IMHO. but thats me.

I use an atv/motorcycle lift not the table style..
