Found a dead baby raccoon at my backdoor this morning. Called the town's animal control who were going to send someone until I said it was dead. I was given a number to call, which I did...... "Hello, Greenburgh Police Department, how can I help you?"
Officer told me to put it in a plastic bag and throw it out in the trash. He was nice enough to tell me to wear gloves when I do it.
Really??? Is that really how we're supposed to dispose of rodents that could very well have been infected with rabies?
I'm not sure I want to follow these instructions, but I don't know what else to do with the carcass. Was thinking of burning it in the firepit, but I tried to burn junk mail out there once and was met with a fireman in the backyard telling me open fires aren't allowed in the town.
My son is out there now bagging it up, but I'm going to seek out a better was to dispose of it. Any ideas?

If there’s a small wooded area near your house, dig a small hole and bury it.
Wrap it in newspaper or paper bag and put that in another paper bag while wearing gloves and using a small shovel. If you want to throw it in the trash, put the paper bag in a good plastic bag.

Correct info. If it is diseased , bag and bury. When animals are picked up roadside , they bag and bury. On occasion , if there is a reptile farm or big cat zoos (?) larger fresh kill is used for food.

If you have a neighbor that is a particular asshole, bag it and put it in his mailbox (but with so many cameras everywhere today, maybe not). I've always put dead things in my garbage dumper (not on top, buried down inside). The basement walkout of my 3-level split (6 steps) has always been an attraction for small animals, mice, birds, etc. And I long ago learned that I need to look down through the window before I ever open that door, becasue they will instantly run into my utility room and behind or even up inside the washer, dryer, fridge and other storage crammed in there, and I can have a devil of a time trying to dig them out of there. BTW, raccoons are mammals, not rodents.

On the topic at hand, realistic answer is bag it up and in the trash. Do the dog poop trick where you put your hands in the bottom of the bag using the bag as a glove, let it drape over the critter as you grip and lift to envelop it in the bag, close it up and in the trash....
But I gotta ask...
You have a firepit.
But you can't legally use it in your locale for... fire?

I put the dead ones, rats squirrels or what have you in trash bags and bag in another trash bag to be incinerated by the county
The ones that I trap in the Havaheart traps I let go over the croton river bridge Open trap count to 2 mississippi and they hit the water swimming either to Montrose, Crotonville or Haverstraw lol I dont think any actually made it 3 miles across the Hudson however

The squirrels I catch in my Havaheart trap (peanut butter bait), get a short 2 minute swim in a garbage can of water. I'm not wasting time and gas driving over to the Potomac. But you have to first vice grip the doors closed because turning them sideways to put in the can, the doors will open, and they will shoot up out of the water and climb your face. Birds I occasionally catch, I let go. I like birds, but this Spring I have taken down a bunch of completed or under-construction nests on my downspouts, outside lights and ornamental trees. And I wish they would stop shitting all over my property. I used to keep a couple of nice bird baths full of water for them, but no more contributing to bird poop.

I just bury them.. If I find'em... A baby I wouldn't worry about rabies.. Most likely a distemper or malnourished. Some new mums don't do well the a full brood of kits 4 -5 , and will let one or 2 die..

My use of Havaheart Traps would not fit the agenda that company uses for marketing. When it comes to the local never-ending grey squirrel population, I have no heart.

I take them down to the ditch bank and let our hawk take care of it or the coyote's but I'm a country dweller otherwise I'd bag it in paper and put it our garbage but that depends on length of time to pickup day.

Yeah, in the real heat of VA summer, I'm not crazy about maggots or flys in the can, so I'll double bag them and make squirrelsicles of them in the freezer until pickup day.

My mom tells a hilarious story about playing with 'sailcats' as a little girl. A sailcat was one run over by cars in the street long enough be a hard and fuzzy disk. She and her girlfriend took took to flying it back and forth to each other, until her mom (my grandma) ran out of the house and told them to stop playing with the filthy thing. This was before Frisbees.

I don't know the rules around you, but up here a fireman friend of mine years ago told they would get the calls of someone having a fire in their backyard. When they would get there they would ask " you are getting ready for a cookout right?" . then inform them a fire for "cooking" was legal so if there was a pack of hotdogs sitting there they couldn't say anything. I guess it wouldn't matter what you were cooking lol.

I'm not eating rodents. I'm particular that way. I just sniped another this morning, and he is now a freezer squrrelsicle until trash day (to avoid maggots).
