My 1998 Valkyrie is desmoged and I am getting a chripping noise.  The noise gets fatser if I increase the RPMs.  The vacumn line to the petcock is new.  Any ideas of what this could be are welcome.

That happened to me a year or two ago.  I was having a weird chirping sound that was driving me crazy.  It ended up being the slave pin on the clutch.  I removed, lubricated, reinstalled and now its fine.  Never heard another sound from it.  Does the sound go away when you pull in the clutch?

Not saying that's your problem, but that's what happened to me.

If the chirping stops when you grab a handful of clutch lever, [as said] it's most likely a dry slave pin in need of some lube.

Noise is present with the clutch in or out.  Chirping noise is relative to the RPMs, faster chirps the higher the RPMs.   Any ideas suggestion on what it could be are appreciated.

Chirping with clutch in or out.  Mine would stop chirping when I pulled the clutch lever in. So, I'm not sure if that's your problem. But, it still could be. Mine would also increase with RPM.

In the diagram #17 is the slave pin. They show 2 but there is only one. If you want to check it anyway all you have to do is pull slave cylinder cover and you'll see the end of the pin. Pull the pin and rub a film of high-temp bearing grease on it, replace the pin and the cover.

The small slave cylinder cover is attached to the clutch hydraulic line and is centered in the clutch cover. Remove the slave cylinder cover only. You might be able to do this with bike on its side stand. A lift would be better/easier.

If this chirping started immediately after the desmog you could have a leak somewhere where you closed of the chrome tubes or removed them and capped the ports. Did you do a partial desmog or full?

Did you adjust the timing belts lately? I overtightened the belts on a 97 Tourer I had and it made a chirping sound, readjusted and everything was fine.  Smiley

My 97 used to do that too. I replaced the vacuum caps on the intakes. Then all the vacuum lines and plugged the chrome pipes that were left on after the de-smog with SS bolts threaded/JB welded into them instead of the vacuum caps that were on them. I don't know which of these fixed it but it’s fixed.

There is a reported noise issue revolving around the alternator drive system. Pretty steady and rpm related.

Today I cleaned the timing belt tension rollers with Acetone, they had some black gunk on them.  One rolled freely with a little pressure and the other would not roll freely before they were cleaned.  Once I cleaned them I could apply a little pressure and they would both rotate.  I checked the free play on the timing belts and they were both good, about 5mm. The moment of truth, I started the Valkyrie and the chirping was gone.  I only hope it is gone for good.   Thanks for all your help with this annoying chirpping.
