Pontiac, WOW

Stumbled across this picture, and while it would have to be considered a mild custom, the designers and stylist at Pontiac really hit a home run in my book. But as with most things, sales of the top of the line models were small and not that many made it out of the showrooms, I suppose due to cost compared to base models.

Cars should be a means of transportation, but this example is approaching true art.

Looks like a '66  2+2.  Came out with a 421, tri power or 4-barrel carb.

       Pontiac I M O went away too early. I've Happily owned a few starting with the  69 Catalina 2 door with the 2 barreled carbed 400. Then the 06 Grand Prix with the Gen III 3.8 with overdrive. Really NICE Ride!! Now posing as a Pontiac the 10 Pontiac Vibe with the 2.4 liter 4 and A W D not too bad BUT Not my old Grand Prix. Going thru H S various friends had Pontiacs with 1 even having a GTO. I've owned Buicks and Oldsmobiles with the Best I M O being my 76 Olds Toronado. Well over 100 M P H and you could still talk and hear in normal speaking tones. Course that Huge THIRSTY 455 could pass most anything except a fuel stop!    Evan as a pure W A G mid to late 60s on the black one with wire wheels. I've owned a couple Big Block G M engines and been happy with them. Driven some Big Block Fords and they be fair stout too. Whens the last time Anyones seen a Pontiac Safari Wagon in captivity??   RIDE SAFE.

 I belong to several full size Pontiac sites. That 66 shows up a lot. beautiful build. If I remember correctly it has a built LS in it. I prefer that Pontiac's have Pontiac engines in them but this is a nice build none the same.....

I thought the posting said this one was a 65 model but I bow to those more knowledgeable of the full size Pontiacs of the day. And I know for a fact that Facebook posters get a lot of facts wrong But I would rock that car everyday of the week if I could.

My one and only ever Pontiac, a 1967 GTO Ram Air I model with a 4 speed, I thought I was some kind of kool back in 1972!

My first W4 withholding job was pumping gas in a Mobil station at 15-17yo in the mid 60s, in downriver Detroit, the Motor City.  I got to look at all the beautiful cars of that era every day on the job. 

Some guys would pull in and say they didn't want some kid messing with their car, and pump their own gas.

On one occasion, an older car came in and I could not find the place to put the gas in.  I looked all over for it.  The driver was laughing and finally got out and tilted a taillight down, and there it was.

I love all the classics but for me with the GM line it was Oldsmobile that always caught my attention the most. The 442 packages, the Cutlass package and the full size land yachts were something else. Back as a teenager I always wanted a Cutlass post or convertible with the big block 455 and Munci 4 speed.

Back then it was great how a buyer could basically build their own car from whatever options were available.

As a teenager maybe 18, I once ran out of gas on a long uphill strech of road  Almost impossible to get the gas in    Never allowed it to go under 1/4 tank after that evening

I would get around 20mpg at 75mph riding to Buffalo or Miami
Amazing for 277 horsepower and a 4bbl

Changed oil every 2-3000 miles and the filter (cartridge type) every other change
Thank you JCWhitney for keeping me flush with those filters and parts

It had an oil bath air filter.  Keeping that engine sparkling clean saved me from bad mojo after I was pulled over twice in florida but that is a story best told over a cold beer
