Here’s one I’ve never seen before!








Somebody’s barn find. A factory ordered 421 Tri-power 4 speed wagon with the rare 8 lug wheel option.

I remember the Bonneville wagon, station wagons around here were pretty popular but most had the Ford or Chevy and a few had the Oldsmobile.

That Bonneville had to get up and go that’s for sure and a real sleeper.

My only wagon was a Ford Pinto (Squire).  It was a commuter during my poverty college years.

It was powered by a Singer Sewing machine. 

I used to take my girlfriend to the drive in movie, and I'd back it into the spot, so we could enjoy the movie laying on our bellies.  It was small and cozy.

It was a pretty reliable car until one day I took it airborne at speed over some raised RR tracks.

  1965. About that time , the GMC transmission  plant was in a fire.  They switched to Saginau (?) manual transmissions if I remember correctly.  There were many odd-ball combos.

It could have been. But for a lack of proper direction and motivation.

Here's a nice restoration I saw outside of Best Buy recently. Those are Pontiac wheels but look like they're from a GTO or Firebird.

I was surprised that GM dropped Pontiac but kept Buick. Pontiac appealed to a younger demographic which I thought would have made more sense for future sales.

Never have been a real fan of Pontiac's.  My mother and father preferred Fords and dad's, at least in my memory, his first new, to him, car in 1960, a Ford Falcon if I remember correctly.  Then a 1959 used Ford Station Wagon (Country Squire I think, it had those fake wood panels on the doors).   That was mom's car.  I did get to drive it on a trip once to visit a friend in Lake Toxaway, NC.

But, to the point above, there were many things about cars in that age that I do sort of miss.  They were simpler and easily to maintain. 

I do remember riding with my Chemistry Teacher back in the sixties to School Meeting.  He had just bought a new, to him car.  I think it was a Pontiac and he told us about his first ride in the care and having the radio suddenly change stations.

Turns out there was a switch under the driver's side floormat that did that when you put your foot on the switch.   First I had ever heard of that. 

Oh, we did a test once while we were living in Myrtle Beach and my friend from Lake Toxaway visited us.  His dad, just retired from the U. S. Air Force and now living at the home he had built there, had just purchased a Pontiac GTO. 

So, we did a test. Steve, his bother and I, took a ride down Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach.  It was summer and lots of people around.  We looked to see who looked at us as we traveled.  Just a few people did.  None waved.

Next we did the same thing in his new GTO.  We got far more looks and smiles and waves then when we were in the Ford wagon.  So, we proved it was not the person but the car that attracted the young ladies.

I went back and looked at the photos again and noticed the grab handle over the glove box.

I’ll bet that got a good work out a few times in the life of that car.

Wow cool car the only thing it could not pass was a gas station.

Had this Firebird 400 convertible, did some work on it and it was pretty quick and fun to drive.

If I remember correctly Pontiac died in about 2008 in the financial crisis. GM kept Buick alive and Pontiac was killed off.  I’ve owned a 2001 Bonneville SSEI (really fast and nimble) and a 2005 Bonneville GXP ( a Cadillac ride).  Pontiac had the looks, no doubt about it.

I still own my first car, a 1966 Impala SS with the original 396 in it. Purchased in about 1977 for $1350.   It is a driver though and gets about 500 miles a year.  They are all, a work in progress.  Fun, yes.  Handling, poor in corners.  Brakes, scary poor.   Visceral, absolutely!  When one kicks it down and the Holley 4 barrel comes to life it simply brings me back.  The machine sings to me.
