Titanium Valves Video

This rare technical video of the new BMW S 1000 RR Superbike, showing valves operating at a very high RPM, is a must see for any motoring enthusiast. The water-cooled four-cylinder inline power unit develops a maximum claimed output of 142 kW (193 hp) at 13,000 rpm and revving up to a maximum speed of 14,200 rpm. Maximum torque of 112 Nm (82.5 lb-ft), in turn, comes at 9,750 rpm.

The two intake and exhaust valves per cylinder made of extra-light titanium are operated by very small and equally light single cam followers. In conjunction with the short sprocket driving the camshaft via an intermediate gear, this ensures supreme revving qualities at the highest speeds as well as exact maintenance of valve timing combined with very compact dimensions.

The use of extremely small and light cam followers furthermore gives the engineer greater freedom in choosing the ideal valve lift curves and, accordingly, in selecting optimum performance characteristics on both road and track.

All engine components are particularly compact and light, limiting weight of the overall engine without ancillaries to 59.8 kg (131.8 lb) and keeping the entire power unit very slim and slender.

Kinda like I heard last summer on the six lane near our house. There is a Steak & Shake up the highway and they used to have a bike night on Thursdays. Toward the end of the evening you can hear them screaming from light to light on that highway. One night while sitting on the patio out back having a toddie for the body with my wife, I could hear a group pulling up to a light just north of our place....sitting there gunning their engines. You could tell when the light changed because all of a sudden it was about six bikes screaming down the road with most hitting the rev limiter....except one. All of a sudden I heard this real loud metallic "whump" and one bike went silent...along with some tires squealing so it obviously locked up on him. It sounded like they all came back to check him out and I could hear some yelling and cussing...mostly directed at the bike. Just for the heck of it, I got on my Valk and rode over that way and sure enough....there he sat looking rather forlorn, I asked and he told me he was waiting for his dad to come with a trailer. There was oil all over the road and shoulder, and a rod sticking out the side. I shined my flashlight on it and there was a huge hole, full of pieces. No rebuilding that one, I wished him luck and rode away. Kid looked to be all of 17, an expensive lesson unless daddy foots the bill.
