I'm having some misfire issues on my 98.
Started with 5&6 not firing, noticed it ran bad and that the pipes to those cylinders were not heating up. Figured it was the coil so I ordered a new one and replaced it. Well now 5&6 fire but 3&4 are now not firing and I feel like 1&2 are not firing fully. Bike will run at full choke but dies if you turn it off. Has anyone ran into anything close to this? I'm pretty confused, I have checked wires and double checked connections. I did check resistance on old coil and got 3 ohms. Thanks for any insight.

if it will only run/idle with the fuel enricher engaged then the pilot jets are clogged.

rarely do honda tek coils fail.

A carb rebuild is in your near future.

what? crazy overkill for clogged pilot jets. the carb rack doesn't even have to be pulled to do it, unless one has extra large meat hooks.

pull the pilot jets clean them re-install go ride and use stabil every tank with TC-W3.

OEM manual spec, 8,000 mi. change intervals. Mine had a failed plug 2x on different change cycles different cylinders right at 10,000 mi. Running iridium's in excess 12,000 mi. but no issue yet just excellent cold starts. No enrichner needed unless sitting for about 3 wks.

I've had one bad coil in 56 yrs. and it was on a 59' Rambler wagon in 70'. It would get wet and act up but I was young and just beginning to learn "mechanics" so to speak.  Grin

I guess what confuses me is that the other cylinders were firing before and now they are not. The carbs probably do need some attention I don't think the previous owner messed with them. Thanks for the input.

The problem went away on 5&6 when you put in a new coil.  That tells us the problem is electrical and not carbs.  (After all, changing a coil does not clean carbs.)  Changing that coil may have "refreshed" the connections associated with those two cylinders.  Try cleaning all connections that go to and from the 1-2 and 3-4 coils, all the way to the plugs.

and to add the dia-electric grease that is put into the spark plug wire end does not transmit electricity.
many over yrs put too much resulting in low electrical transmission.

Mr. Kelley, I learned: The 3 ohm reading shows the coil is not shorted or open.  This is no guarantee that the insulation inside the coil functions at high voltage.  On my 4 cylinder Honda, the coils were "breaking down" when the bike was running.   New eBay replacement coils (with wires) were not expensive and returned the bike to good performance.

If you move the new coil to 3 and 4 and those cylinders run good, we would expect 5 and 6 to run weak or be dead.  If the problem can be turned on and off that means we have found the problem.

It is easy to try this and it won't cost you anything.
