I started my exercise and diet today....I haven't had any cokes for 24 hrs and I took a brisk, one mile walk when I got home....took about 15 mins....then I did two sets of stretches and back exercises....it's not much, but I have to start somewhere..... I plan on adding a little more distance as time goes on and will probably run it as I get further in...I can do up to 2.5 miles just by walking in my neighborhood and the one next door.....at 40yrs old, I should be weighing 216lbs!!....I'd be happy back around 180lbs...

Stan, try your exercises and stretches before the walk/jog. The idea is to do what it takes to get your heart rate up, and keep it up for 20-25 mins, at least three times a week (this is a minimum). Stay warm with loose sweats, not a t-shirt and shorts. You're doing right starting easy, and pay attention to your knees and ankles. Decent shoes are a must; stay away from running shoes and wear a full-heel cross trainer..much less chance of a twisted ankle. I found it a good practice to keep some kind of log book; it's not necessary but a good stimulus to keep at it. Walk against traffic on the left. I use a treadmill and music helps: music is OK outdoors (walkman), but you can't hear the cars.
I won't talk diet, just eat enough to feel good and quit, and avoid junk the best you can. A good dinner salad with ham and easy dressing three times a week will help. Plenty of water instead of coke.

I think I have a way you can stay in the groove of personal fitness wiht this private trainer who has agreed to help. I told her you were a beginner and all she wants in return is a ride on your Valkyrie. Perfect situation for both of you and I have taken the liberty of giving her your phone number. Here she is hope ya'll hit it off Bud. Your Friend Big Al

Thanks Jess....good advice.......I did walk about 5-6 miles today at work picking up litter....just not at a constant pace....

My Paw-in-law found out he was diabetic about 4-5 years ago...he quit taking the medicine/shots until about a year ago, and now he's pretty much lost his eyesight....maybe if he'd taken it more seriously when he first found out about it, then he'd still be able to see today...he was a gunsmith and now he can't even see well enough to eat with a fork..... Keep on top of it Don and maybe you'll not have to go through the same thing.....good luck to you......

Hang with it Stan. I been walking 2 to 3 miles a day for awhile. I need to add in some exercise too. I'll lose 5 or 10 lbs then pig out one weekend and blow it. I drink mostly water. You can do it man.

You can do it man. I have been going to the gym just over a week now, can not do weekends, but have hit the gym 6 days now....taking it easy is the trick...3 miles on the tread mill and 25-30 minutes on the stationary bike (which keeps my heart rate up the longest... Getting in shape to get in shape is tough work...especially when you sit on your keester all day long... Good luck Stan, you need to go six weeks to make it a habit...at least that is what they are telling me...I am working hard....my doc says I am pre diabetic...I am also staying away from the junk... I am down 6 pounds so far...35 more to go...220 is my goal...

I hit 225 in Dec and flipped out. Now after getting a diet and getting a totalgym ,I am at 194. Its hard but got to get fit,not any younger. Stay with it and work up to a good work out. See a Doc to make sure you arent hurtting anything. You have done the hardest thing and that is starting so keep it up.!! . Want to get to 175-180,the last 10 will suck tobe sure.

258 and feel great, jus becaue my pants won't fit, can't see Mr Happy except ina mirror, shoes wear out quickly and most of all the steering wheel in my truck just rubs the heck out of my belly.
But I think the walking and weight lifting have ti wait until 4 months after May 12th , thAT'S when my surgery to repair the hole in my heart is supposed to get plugged wiht a Disc by Catheter.
Although I did do twenty pushups today, 20 setups, 60 arm curls wiht a 35LB Barbell in each hand .
But that is very light weight for me anyway.
Gotta do somthing or I might start drinking again.
LOL
Still Sober 17 days, keep praying for me.

Stan, this is my idea of women's fitness (not some gargantuan steroid monster). Watch it before you start for proper motivation (turn it up). Gets your heart going before you even start.

Stan, by far the easiest exercise is walking. A good pair of walking shoes and maybe a good pair of hikers for rainy days. In the Fitness center the stretching for me is done after walking and before and after lifting weights. Warm up first at any rate.
A word of caution. Don't haulass until you're into the program awhile. Start out slower or you might stop before it really starts helping.

Stanley first dont cut out all the things you like because that can get old real fast. When you want to loose weight or get in shape it should be a lifestyle that can be maintained. meaning when you stop with the balls to the wall diet/exercise then eventually you will be back in the same boat. I find that most fail because they dont, plan what can I maintain or slide a little for the rest of my life. You may be surprised how much walking will slowly reduce your weight. I'm not talking about what you do at work I'm talking about a walk that gets your heart rate up to say 130 bpm and maintains it there for 20 minutes. Working your way up to say 40 minutes. Working your way into a routine can be hard for the first month but once your over the hump then it gets to the point that you want to do it and even feel guilty that you dont. If you take all the enjoyable things out of your normal routine life gets to suck but if you moderate things and throw in the exercise then you build on a good foundation and slowly drop the weight and then you can incorporate other things into your routine. This is the secret you took awhile to get where you are well have mercy on yourself and slowly drop the weight embrace a fitness routine that you can live with as you build strength and endurance incorporate more and more things and mix up the routine. I have seen so many go great guns for awhile and then give up. The surprising thing is you may be able to drop weight just by walking and the rest will be at your choosing as to what to do. Some have no idea what it takes for their body to drop weight and do to much. If you want to go to the gym I can give you a basic routine that will get you going and help you learn the ropes. As for the diabetes that was a choice made to go off the insulin and unfortunately with bad results. A blood glucose meter will do wonders and also their are vitamins and supplements that can be taken that will lower blood sugar levels and help the neuro transmitters adjust levels in your blood. Old age diabetes treated is not all that serious as long as its treated and it not all that uncommon either.
