I live in Tomball Tx and my wife wanted to go to Menard Texas 280 mikes away to our sons ranch.  Its only about 60 miles from the 3 Twisted Sisters at hiway 41 so We trailered my Valkyrie to my sons ranch.   My other son and his son...my 16 yr old grandson...trailered his ST1300 and his Kawasaki KLR to the ranch.  I have read on this sight about when trailering Valkyries they can hydrolock with gas on top of the pistons and you can do major damage to your bike if you try to start it.  I got to the ranch and when I turned on the key and just bumped the starter it was solid.   Tried to bump it one more time and still locked up.  I pulled all 6 sparkplugs and when I  hit the starter it spun and a bunch of gasoline shot out of one of the cylinders like a cannon and it all hit me right in the face and eyes.   I crawled into the house and washed my eyes out real well and I have a chemical burn around my eyes and feels like sandpaper in my eyes.  My wife is s retired nurse and is helping me thru this.  Hopefully I will be better by morning and able to make the ride.  THANKFULLY the gasoline did not ignite as I was doused in gssoline.  My son finished the repair and it cranks and runs fine now.

Ok, I’ll ask.
  Why hydro lock when trailering?

No I didnt have the fuel shut off.  I have trailered the Valkyrie many times since my wife had to quit riding due to medical reasons many years ago .  I have never had the problem before.  I always have just bumped the starter to make sure it wasnt locked up when trailering.  It has never done this before and I never turn my gas off.  Bike has 128,000+ miles on it.  Glad I knew not to keep trying to start it.  This is the morning of the ride and my eyes are better but still feels like I have a little sand or dust in my eyes.  Dont know how my eyes are going to do today in the predicted bright sunshine and winds.  My trailer is travel ready so if it gets bad I can call my wife to come get me.   Will give a report this evening.

Can be many reasons, I guess.

Does anyone really understand all the reasons?

I had it happen to me after trailering to FL one year.

Not knowing the correct way to prep a bike for that long a trip, I shut off the gas and drained the carbs.

After unloading, fired her up, went to lunch with my buddy and when we came out, my bike would not turn over.  No "clunk" or any symptom I recognized.

After checking battery, kill switch, side stand, clutch lever, etc, I finally though VAPER LOCK.

Pulled a plug, nothing noticeable, so pulled them all, hit the starter and covered my buddy with gasoline.

He was not impressed, but couldn't complain because I had pushed started his stinking Harley several times that year before he fixed some electrical part or another.

My conclusion is, the carb bowls being empty, a float stuck in the open position and when I turned on the petcock, it didn't rise from the gas.

I spent the first day of my trip in FL checking the carbs, replaced or rebuilt the petcock, can't remember which, and it all checked out and never happened again.

So now if I trailer a Valk, it's with carbs full, I believe all that bouncing up and down didn't do the floats any good.

But who's knows?

I wonder if bouncing on the trailer if maybe the carb floats are moving around allowing gas to seep thru

Hoe your eyes suffered no "long term" harm.

Otherwise, I shall remember this, just in case I have a similar event.

My ride with my son and grandson thru the Texas Hill Country was 280 miles of great riding in near perfect weather.  My eyes gave me quite a lot of discomfort but was do able.   I have a scheduled eye doctor apptment in a few days so I will talk with the doctor about it then.

Funny story...  while on the ride we stopped in Comfort Tx for some refreshments. There were many motorcycles there at the time.  Got to talking with a guy around 50 yrs old  riding a BMW GS. Nice guy and  he is originally from Brazil and talked with a heavy accent.  He was proud of his GS and was showing us all the features on his bike when I noticed he was wearing a Harley Davison t-shirt.    I said  "I have never seen a BMW rider wearing a HD t-shirt".  He looked at me funny and said "we are in Texas and I was told that in Texas you must wear Harley Davison t-shirt to fit in....". Haha!!!!   He was really a nice guy.

Hey Digger, my eyes have also been giving me a bit of trouble when riding.  Even with the big Interstate faring and shield, they alternate between dry and watery.  I only wear half helmets (full face give me claustrophobia and restrict vision), and the wind and dust bug me, and I'm also sensitive to bright full sun.

So I got a half helmet with a tinted drop down half face shield that helps quite a bit.  And I always use eye drops before each ride (Systane lubricant, preservative free) that also helps.  Some eye-drops are only to get the red out and burn like hell, avoid those.

Also wear good ear plugs to protect my hearing (from wind roar, not exhaust).

I rode a Hog for 18years before moving up to the Valkyrie, and have a drawer full of nice silkscreen Hog Tshirts.  I never wear them on the the Valk, and can't bring myself to destroy them by using them as work shirts.

My eyes are so sensitive to bright that you will hardly ever (not quite never) see me outside without my prescription sunglasses on. You could almost say my theme song is Corey Hart's "I wear my sunglasses at night"....

Gas burns like mad but does not really do damage. Carb cleaner or acid another story.

No I didnt have the fuel shut off.  ...

Oops.

Steps that close the line for fuel flow while the Valk is sitting still don't necessarily work as the Valk is bumping a bit going down the road.  It doesn't take much but a piston does need to be in the open position.  It's a roll of the dice.

Headed home tomorrow trailering the Valk.  I loaded it today and strapped it down.  I then shut the fuel valve off and cranked it and ran it till it died.  We will see.

I would think if the bowls are full the floats will not move much unless the gas ran out from the trailer bouncing, but again, who knows?

Glad your eyes are better. cooldude
