It’s at the North end of the outer banks islands. Might be the start of a bigger trip.

YES !!! The OuterBanks are well worth visiting, even during the off-season. While we lived down in Raleigh, we loved to take the 3 hour trip out there just to unwind. Lots of tourist things to do (wright Brothers, Lighthouses, Outer banks history, etc. ). Lots of good places to eat (we love Outer Banks Brew station in Kitty Hawk, but there are lots of others). Off season is much cheaper for hotels.

Kill Devil Hills is a town on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It has grown from a small group of beach houses into a Summer vacation destination. The first flights by the Wright Brothers were made there. There is an historic park and museum where they first flew.
The huge sand dune nearby is at Jockey's Ridge State Park. People may see it and think "That's Kill Devil Hill". Not really, but big hill, anyway. The historic Bodie Island Lighthouse is close by and is a favorite of photographers and bird watchers. And, there's plenty of beach.
Unless you live in nearby Eastern NC, Kill Devil Hills is going to be a long day trip. If you have the time, bring along your fishing gear and spend several days.

I have done several trips down the "Outer Banks" (and Kill Devils Hill). Yes it is a good ride. Fun things to see and, in general, a good ride.
However, the recent hurricane in the area may have degraded some of the roads so, you might want to check on that before you travel. I think the upper part, Nags Head (which is where we were during the August Hurricane) was not harmed. If you want to travel further south, to Hatteras Island for example, there was some major damage other the roads .

We live about 60 miles away and visit the outer banks a few times a year. Never on Friday or Saturday between May and September. With all the rentals from Corolla to Hatteras the traffic to get to Rt12 and up and down leads to it being backed up a lot for the old renters to get out and new ones to get in on a 2-lane road. Very nice place in the off season. Some good food and places to visit. Nice Light Houses to visit. We love Duck, Corolla, and Ocracoke island. Nice white sand beaches. After the 3rd weekend in September the house rentals come down dramatically. We have rented several ocean front houses in Corolla over the last 15 years. Get 4-5 couples and split expenses. Fairly cheap ocean front 7-day vacation. Around $125 a night for a 1-4 million house. As an example, that house is over $8000 a week during the season and was around $3000 a week the last time we rented it 2 years ago. The one we like has 5 King Masters and 9BRs total, pool, hot tub and a huge top floor that holds everyone with huge decks and views of the beach and water. Beach driving access is 1-2 miles down the street and you can drive for miles back towards the VA state line and there are wild horses running around. Dan & Trish
