I have a guy wanting to sell me a 2004 ST-1300 with what I consider alot of miles on it. I a, fa,iliar with the longevity of the Valk but noe sure of the St. It has 100,000 on the clock and has been VERY well maintained and has alot of extras on it. Such as power windshied heated grips and a trunk. He is asking $6500 and I want to know how good a deal that is, it seems a little high to me. The bike does not have a scratch on it and looks very nice, I'm just concerened with the mileage.

As always thank everyone here on this board for any help.

I look at them on E-Bay / Cycle Trader / Craigslist etc. IMO that's a steep price for a bike with that many miles.VRCC member Britman owns one maybe he'll see this and respond .

You can probably find one with 40k on it for that price.Don't shy away from the st1100 either. It is a very good bike. These bikes don't have the longevity of a Valk or GW.

When a bike gets that many miles on it there are special problems that creep into the picture.

Valve adjustmnets , wheel bearings, caliper condition, have the brake fluids been changed regularly, water pump problems, exhaust rusting out, radiator condition, plastic parts tend to degrade wiht ultraviolet light and become brittle, gas tanks can develop internal rust.

Whe you do work on it bolts that worn tend to seize.

You can find a better candidate at Tommy's Motor Sports in the norris area. Tennessee

Saw tow ST1300's wiht a lot less miles in good shape in the Chicken Coop, used bike area.

I think his number is 865-494-6500 but you can google this and get it if my memory is fussy.

Had a TIA/ stroke recently and not the sharpest knife in the drawer right now.

But I believe they were priced lower thatn that one.

Every body I talk to likes thier St but they are not what you call a good sounding loud bike but everybody is not like me, I like them looud.

These bikes I saw were in the 15,000 to the 20,000 mile range in great to good condition.

Here's their web site.

http://www.tommysmotorsports.com/links.asp

Talk to Tommy Thompson or Mike Nichols the salesman. And mention Big Al Cate and they will jack that price up for you.

Nah they will shoot you straight and I have been delaing wiht Tommy Thompson for about 24 years.

They can get you a good deal on delivery, they have their own dleivery trailer.

Good Luck

It might be a fair deal, but you will have to decide if it is in very good condition and maintenance.  Does it have the topcase (trunk), ABS or any other add-ons?  If he says the bike is in near perfect condition, would he be willing to contract to pay half of any unforeseen maintenance, engine trans, etc for say 1-2 years (for that price)?  Can he show you the service record?  Most lower mile '04s are going for more money.

I believe these are great machines, personally.  It is a lot of miles, but distance riders often do take care of their bikes.

Yes the bike has a trunk and a supposedly $1000 dollar electric windshield and heated grips. It does have all the service recoreds with it and was owned by a distance rider. The current owner is the 2nd owner who is also the service manager at the local Honda dealership. Thanks for the responses so far and please keep them comming.

I have a '07 Yamaha FJR1300a which is a direct competitor to the Honda and I bought it last Sept with 3K on the clock for $8400 with several nice accessories.  $6500 for a bike with over 100K is way overpriced in my opinion.  I would pass.  IMHO

From 2004 on, the electric windshield was standard.  For 2003, only ABS models had it.

Sorry to threadjack, but Howdy ataDude! Your 2004 is still going nicely, even if I ride it more than my wife does...

(We, technically my spousal unit, bought ataDude's 2004 ST1300 a few years back...)

I suppose things are ultimately "worth" what the buyer is willing to pay!  However, I think you should be able to do better.  Just a quick Craigslist search revealed the following bikes:

I owned one and put 65,000 trouble-free miles on it.  Very good motorcycle.  However, I would not buy one with 100,000 miles on it.  The V-4 is a very complicated engine and you would be looking at mega-bucks when major repairs are needed.

I have a 2008 Connie14 that I'll sell for $8,000.00.  Intrerested?  24,000 miles.  Transferable warranty.

Ahem, incorrect. As with many bikes correct maintenance will prolong life.

I have ridden my 2005 for 70,000 miles and the valve shims have never been adjusted. It's a Honda  cooldude

I know of 100,000 mile + ST1100 and ST1300.

Couple questions
1st a statement, I love my 01 Valk, currently with 66,900 miles and intend to keep it.

I am considering buying a ST1300 thinking it may be a bit more agile than my Valkyrie, especially at slow parking lot speeds. Also its a bit lighter. Would appreciate your experience & advice.

Attn: Britman, I saw where you said you had over 70,000 miles on yours without even a valve adjustment, I would appreciate your advice, let me know how it rides compared to the Valkyrie. Ride is very important to my wife.
Is there a ST1300 Tech/Chat site even close to as good as the VRCC ?

Higher centre of gravity so less agile at parking lot speeds until you get used to it. Lot taller so if you are inseam challenged it can be a stretch. However the seat does have 3 different height settigns.

Will blow a Valkyrie into the weeds from a standing start and thru the twisties. BUT it's designed to be a different class of bike. The Valkyrie is THE BEST long distance cruiser bar none.

Less passenger butt room unless you spring for a Russell Day Long. The suspension is firmer - it's the nature of the beast after all.

I've got way more miles on my Valk than on my ST1300, but... The ST is a blast, and if you've got the right body type for it (6'7", 300 pounds with a bad back... I don't!) can be a great long distance bike...

One big thing for me on the ST - Don't be afraid of the rev's. It's a snappy bike all through the RPM range, but for us old guys the instinct is to shift earlier... The ST really likes to rev up into the higher part of the RPM range for the BIG smiles...

Go hang out on the ST forum, there's some good folks there. Tell Mellow I said howdy if ya' do... Wink
