Am I doing something wrong in setup? Didn't they used to?

You should see the little "New" graphic next to any thread that is new, or has new posts in it since your last viewing of it.

Thanks Scott.
I was just hoping there was another way. For the visually impaired. I can see a line  amongst other lines if different in color and much easier then the drk blue new icon against drk bckgrnd. And that doesn't work so well without refreshing the page. I switched to white bckgrnd but it blinds me and makes the entire page difficult.
Not a problem. I 'll deal with it. The grays are easier to read for just about all.

It sounds like you already know how to change themes.
Another alternative is the set of links at the top of the page, labeled:
Show unread posts since last visit.
and
Show new replies to your posts.

Judicious use of that could get what you want, I think...
