About two weeks ago my speedometer stopped working. I decided it was the cable which was a likely culprit so I ordered one. It came in the mail promptly, but I haven't had a chance to put it on until today.
So this morning I pulled the shield and removed the speedo and cable. The old was is definitely broken. The ends don't turn together.
I put it all back together in about 20 minutes which I thought was fast and worthwhile before work. I took off down the road to work and it took me a little while to realize the speedometer wasn't turning. Honestly, I've stopped looking at it so I didn't notice.

Can the speedo be repaired at all? Or is it just time for a new one?

While my cable was on order I had removed the end from the wheel and looped it up out of the way because it was making a noise. I'm fairly certain that the male end on the wheel was turning with the wheel. Although I honestly wouldn't swear to it.

I think the problem must then be in the speedo itself.

So any tips to trouble shooting that? or possible fixes?

Pull the cable from the speedo and make sure it's still turning...it's more common to strip off the gears in the lower drive on the wheel than the speedo itself.

If it's the speedo, used or new one is probably your best bet.

I guess Daniel got to it first, but here's my reply:

First check if your new cable is still tight on both ends.  If the new inner cable didn't seat in the square holes, you might have tightened the nut but it may become loose the moment the cable turned and seated itself properly in the hole.  Check your cable and wheel hub speedo gearbox by removing the cable from the speedo and spinning the raised front wheel.

Gryph cooldude I like simple problems to look for first. It could be a missed seat issue. That would make sense. Easy enough to check now that I know how easy the shield is to take off of the front. We'll check that and then check the wheel unit is still going around like it should. Wheel is turning fine so I don't think it is dragging which is a start at least.
Thanks for the place to start Gryph and Daniel cooldude cooldude

Ya know, if ya pop a wheelie, then touch the front brake, that would look like a broken speedo too!

Last night on the ride home I realized I'd picked up 2 miles on the speedo. After work today me and Dad pulled the speedo cable off at the wheel. With a little flat head screwdriver bit on a variable speed drill we were able to get the speedo to react. So I think the speedo and new stainless steel motion pro cable are good. We double checked that everything was tight and not in a bind.

Took it out for a spin. I only picked up a tenth in a mile in a 2 mile shake down ride.

I think the problem must be at the wheel. Off to shopping I'm going.

To keep the clear cover from oxidizing and turning brown, coat it with sunblock.

I can't locate the issue of Roadbike magazine I read it in but I would say at least everytime you wash your bike.  Weekly probably wouldn't be a bad idea though.  When I find the mag, I'll post the info Andrew MacDonald put in his tech column.

My parts came in a few weeks ago. I ordered the speedo sending unit (wheel end) from Pinwall from a torn down Valk donor.

They sat for a while. Today I had a break mid-day so I swung by the shop after lunch to put them on. Went on easily. One odd thing I noticed as I had both parts off in hand. Mine had a 4 made into the back of it (1998 Tourer). The new one had a 5 in the same location. Everything else checked out.

I could see wear on the plastic gear tabs, so I think this was part of the problem at least.

any idea what the 4 and 5 meant? I figure they should be interchangeable.

The speedo is reading, but now I'm wondering how accurate it is. None are exactly right. But was I really going 15 mph down the driveway? I just don't know.

I would guess it is a manufacturing code for a lot number, or production date, or something.  I would not worry about it.  Just check out the speedo.
