We rode out Sat. to find gas stops for the ride...things didn't go well at all...about 100 miles from Wytheville my newly converted SuperValk started blowing fuses, losing my signals and fuel and mileage gauges, but no big deal Tracy can keep the mileage for me so we keep going, after 200 miles I decide we better head back because I didn't want to ride in the dark with no tail lights...I'm doing about 75 and come up on a white car and a truck so I pull out to pass, white car, unmarked police car..he falls in behind me and I hang at 75...can't signal to change lanes and I didn't want him to notice I didn't have a tail light out...luck goes my way...still in the passing lane a guy in car passes all three of us on the right side doing about 90, cop now has bigger fish to fry and goes after him...what a shock this guy had...5 miles down the road my bike starts rocking from side to side, feels like wind buffing, no..flat rear tire, got off at the next exit and sure enough theres a lump the size of a soft ball left center in the tire with splits allowing the air out, no plugging this one...had to ride bitch on the trike for 150 miles to get home for a truck and trailer...kept saying I'm invisible, I'm invisible...no way...a millon bikes on the road and they are all waving the wifey is laughing all the way home...get into the mountains and I feel like I'm on the Jamaican bobsled team, lean left, lean right...drive all the way back to get the bike and now the tire is completely down and when I go to move it the tire breaks bead and the wheel just spins in the tire, can't get it loaded and its 11 pm..lucky again... there is a giant of a man in the parking lot who offers to help, this guy looks like Mr. Clean and must have weighted 300 lbs..between him and Tracy they were able to push the bike onto the trailer while I rode it with the wheel spinning in the tire while the tire is flopping around trying to come off the rim...try that sometime... anyway got home at 2 am. never did get the gas stops down...I'll give it a try next nice day...stay tuned. There just ain't no substitute for good "casings" is what an old man once told me....

I just hope your kickstand was up so RJ won't give you more grief!  tickedoff

I'm sure Tracy loves having you ride "nice person" with her more than you know.... having a big tough biker dude on the back of her trike.... don't get much better than that, huh Tracy?

Let's see.... that's twice in less than a year that the trike has bailed you out Highbinder.... I'd say that's good insurance for you to have on most any trip....

The good part is... you can make a return trip to find the gas stops that you needed. Get some new tires on that ole Valk and run her hard.... she's sure looking good....

Having a Valk on a trailer ain't the worst thing.... but I guess it's a close second... to having to drive 150 miles back home and back to get the trailer. Better luck next time fella! Ride Safely!

that I passed on I-81 Sat. I thought that it looked like Tracy's Trike.

But I decided it wasn't because you were riding two up. Smiley

We passed about the 100mi marker.

You were headed south and I was headed north.

Let me know the next time you want to give it a shot if I'm free I'll hook up with you some where.

or

If you figure that Bristol is mile Zero, Christiansburg is @ Exit 118.

There are multiple options for fuel there.

The easiest is a shell station that sets @ the bottom of the last ramp. I think it's 118A but I'd have to double check that.

Ironto is @ exit 128 and there are two gas stations there, one of which is a small truckstop.

Troutville is @ exit 150 and there are multiple gas stops there.

I'm just not sure if standards or tourers can make it 150mi on a tank.

If you'd like, I can take a day and ride north from Roanoke to the state line.

Just give me an Idea of how far apart you want the stops to be and I'll let you know what your options are.

and I wasn't there to get a picture of you riding behind Tracy ... maybe next time.

Hope you get the bugs ironed out of the Super-Valk because she really is a good looking bike.

This thread is useless without pictures. I know Tracy had the camera with her.

Better it quit on you on a "fun day" then a on real trip Don.

3fan4life.....so that was you on the black Valk....we saw you and I said to Tracy, I hope we don't know that guy.. Grin...what a day....hey yea, next time we get ready to make that run we'll give you a holler...I think our first stop will be Troutville...I'm trying to stay with truckstops, they have lots of pumps and bathrooms and usually have other stations in the area...when you stop to fuel 30 or 40 bikes and you have to stop every 100 miles, time becomes a problem....no one wants to be still at the pump and see the ride pull out..I'm thinking maybe the Interstates can stay off the pumps 1 out of 2 stops...I know my I/S will go 200 miles easy...stay tuned, I'll let you know when we head out again..

A bad day on a bike is better than good day at work.  Just part of the fun of ownership.  Anyone that has been riding as long as we have has been there once or twice.
Hey If you need help mapping out whats where.  I can head down from Gettysburg as you guys are coming up and we can compare notes.

highbinder,

Sorry hear about your trip cut short...better to be on the back of the trike then walking home...been there done that in the days before cell phones...  Wink

The seat you have your your Super Valk?? How do you like it and of course where did you get it??? I am looking to replace my I/S seat since I went to the Super Valk set up.

Also, what are the dates for your Blue/Gray ride??? I may take a day trip from South Jersey and try to meet up with you guys...

Don, sorry for your troubles; when things go bad it seems they come in threes, fours, etc.  At least you gave us a FUNNY post to read, and I enjoyed it.  " Jamaican Bobsled team" HAHAHAHA

Looks like we're getting about two seeks of rain here in VA, starting now.

BTW, VA does not even require turn signals for bikes (I'm pretty sure)(they do have to work, if on the bike, to pass inspections), but hand signals are always legal.   After installing LED signals on the wife's bike, with an electronic flasher instead of the load eqalizers, the damn things did all kinds of goofy intermittent blinking,  so until I get the grounds figured out, she must hand signal all turns.

Big Rig....the seat on my Super Valk is a Russell Day Long....a truly custom saddle...when you order one you must send 4 photo's of you sitting on your bike along with weight, height and inseam....the seat in leather ran about 500 bucks and well worth the money...as for the Blue/Grey Ride that is June 12th, 13th and 14th....check the homepage board and look on coming events...we'd be glad to see you there and then you can put some faces to some of these yahoo's , see ya...

Tracy,

Tell the truth, Did you have one of those "cat that just ate the canary" grins on your face with Donny riding on the back???

Sounds funny but I'm sure it wasn't at the time.  Don, Thanks for putting this together and working out the specifics.  When I asked Joe this past Saturday about gas stops and food stops for 100+ bikes he just kinda shrugged his shoulders.

Anyway, I hope things go smoother from here on in because I am really looking forward to this ride.

Take care,

Paul Evil
