Good day to one and all.
Please excuse my ignorance, but when standing on the right of the bike, attached to the left of the carb bank is a unit with three wires leading from it. Can anyone please tell me what the unit is and what is its function. I see that the two screws holding the unit in place look like tork screws, not your normal phillips.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am not familiar with anything that has 3 wires attached to it on the carb bank.  Can you provide a picture of it or maybe tell us if there is anything else coming into the "thing"?  Tubes? 

My first thought was a cruise control...but it would have more than just the 3 wires.

Can you post a pic of it?  The only thing I can think of behind the carb bank on the right side of the Valk is the ignition switch.  It is held on with torx screws and has wires attached to it.  It also is chrome.

It is definately not the ignition switch. It is definately attached to the carb bank. I have a Klymer manual plus a downloaded manual and neither of them show this item. The Klymer manual has a wiring diagram in colour. I checked the colours of the wires leaving the device and they are not anywhere in the wiring diagram. I will have to remove the tank and follow the wires.

this is not a bike made for amercia. It is a throttle postion sensor (TPS) that works with the ICM which I tend to remember that only the european bikes have. If u search the archives the posts about this might still be there.

I tend to agree with the TPS suggestion.  US bikes do not have it.  Additionally... Valks made for sale in Japan (as I recall) also have the reverse feature that the Goldwing has... and, as such.... have hardware on them that US bikes do not.

I hope someone can help with my VIN number. There seem to be letters and numbers missing according the Vin page in shoptalk.
My VIN NUMBER IS : SC34 - 1000103. These numbers and letters are not on a plate byt rather stamped into the steering head.

Sure sounds like export model.  The fact it is stamped is also an export bike.  US ones use a plate. What is the VIN on the title?  Should be complete there.

SC34- is export, but without the next letter, cannot tell where to.

The TPS allows more advance at light throttle settings and drops off the advance above about 3/4 throttle.
Works a bit like the ECT mod, there is a variable resistor in it that is  turned with the carby shaft.

I have an European beauty (Belgium) and mine has the same.

there will be other differences such as :

-no need to desmog- that US-installation is not there, the 5 vacuumnipples at the intakes are with a rubber end (no hoses attached - only the 6 has the hose needed to give the vacuum for the fuelswitch.

-you will propably also have that airrestrictor in your airbox- don't take that sponge out or the bike will not pull past 2500rpm anymore (too much air).

-your jets will also be different from them from the States (smaller sizes)

-your headlamp will be made of glass (no plastic) but it will be not so bright and clear like the US-version (thats why I changed mine for the US-model)

etc.

Then...you're on the hunt for all the bits/bobbles Honda sells for the GL1500 Goldwing's reverse system and converting.  As I recall... the lack of acres of plastic on our bikes... make the bits/bobbles quite visible.  Been a long time since I saw pix of it though.

My engine number is SC34E 1000121, if this helps to find out what country my bike was exported to.
To FLATSIX: My bike has been desmoged. There is no air restrictor in the air box. The headlamp is plastic.
To MP: I have no reverse gear.
