Halfway thinking this is normal. But it seems when it's cold (30 degrees) I'll get oil smoke out of the left bank that clears after a minute or so. Is this just from the oil that sits in the head?

Are you sure its oil? Is it black or white? My guess its white. I noticed this year that mine does that till its warmed up. I believe its just condensation. I never notice it during the summer. I'm not worried about mine. Unless someone says different!

That's kinda what I figured... It's hard to tell, it looks white, but smells like oil. I'm with you, I'll just put it outta my mind, and monitor the oil level.

It is oil, I'd bet. The Valks sit with the left bank lower than the right. When the oil rings on the pistons line up just right (just wrong?) some will seep past and get in the cylinders. Wings have done this since 75. Also, as the engine oil ages, it happens more. Fresh oil may stop it completely.

By chance are you using seafoam or something similar. If so that maybe all it is. I had the same experience, till I figured it was my Seafoam.

Ditto to what Valker says. Common to the Valk and gl1200, gl1500 GoldWings. As bike sits on kickstand some oil can seep into cylinder on left side causing brief oil smoke on startup. Nothing to worry about.

Glad to hear that, as my 99 Interstate does the same thing. The Tourer does not. My 01 I/S didn't do it either.

Have a center stand? Place the bike horizontal overnight and see if it still happens. No center stand, how about a block under the kick stand, but not too high so it falls over the other side.
You should also be able to smell it too, wether it is water or oil, or staright exhaust. Not pleasant, but should let you know.

Very common in the older wings, Usually corrected by replacing guide seals.
I would suspect old/hard valve guide seals, especially since it is the left bank and only at startup.
(Yes, I'm just agreeing with most of what has been said)
