Hey all,
I have a cali model 98 tourer and I am building the low tech (wooden) lift adapter from the shoptalk pages.  I just finished making my cuts in the wood and went to do a dry fit before I screwed everything together and that is when I noted that the evap canister? (a cylinder about 8" long by about 4" in diameter) is in the way down there.  First, is that the evap canister I am seeing under the bike?  I have done the desmog from the instructions in shoptalk but only removed the pair valves and all the extra tubing above the engine.  Can I remove this canister?  or does anyone have suggestions for adapting around it?
thanks all

I too have a CA '98 Tourer. I have a welded adapter which fits fine. I've heard a report on the board that the bike doesn't run right when you remove the Canister until some other plugging was done. For now, just remove the 2 bolts holding it and let it hang to install and use your wooden adapter.

Cali guy here with a Cali bike.  I removed said cannister a few months ago to accommodate a lift stabilization device.  I'm not a wrench.  I have the repair manual.  My interpretation of the connections going into the cannister is that the cannister is only filtering outbound vapor before it hits the outside world atmosphere.  I recently blew the cobwebs out of the scoot after a long period of time in dry dock.  I notice no difference in performance in the 30 or 40 miles put on a couple weeks ago with the absence of said cannister.  She still purred like a kitten and roared like a lion.  If there is a wrench in the crowd with a better synopsis of the scenario I'd like to read about it.   sheets

2k I/S desmogged cannister off, no difference. BUT, keep all the spare parts as a CYA.
my 2 cents
